What is the Glitch in PAC-MAN 256?
The Glitch turns an old arcade-game failure into the central threat. The original PAC-MAN’s 256th level was infamous for becoming unplayable; in PAC-MAN 256, an all-consuming Glitch advances through the maze behind PAC-MAN. How does the game play?
You guide PAC-MAN through an upward-scrolling, never-ending maze, eating PAC-DOTS and fruit, using power-ups, and steering clear of Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. The Glitch adds pressure from behind, so survival means balancing the urge to collect with the need to keep moving. The goal described by the publisher is to survive and pursue a high score.
Dots, ghosts and power-ups
Bandai Namco’s product page lists power-ups including Laser, Tornado and Giant, plus returning ghosts Sue, Funky and Spunky alongside the familiar quartet. It also lists ten themes. Counts of available power-ups differ by official page: the franchise page says more than 15, while the American product page says over 20. What does “256” mean during play?
The official PAC-MAN page says that reaching a 256 PAC-DOT combo triggers a “super special surprise.” That is a separate in-game reference to the number; the Glitch itself evokes the original arcade game’s 256th level.
Is PAC-MAN 256 an endless runner?
It is often described in runner-like terms because the maze keeps going and the Glitch pushes you forward. More precisely, Bandai Namco calls it an endless maze and an endless race, while its mechanics center on navigating corridors, gathering items and avoiding ghosts. “Endless-maze arcade game” captures the documented format without suggesting it is a conventional side-scrolling runner.
Can you play PAC-MAN 256 with friends?
Yes, the console release was advertised with local co-op for up to four players. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement describes players working together to eat dots and Power Pellets while escaping ghosts. Which platforms is it on?
Bandai Namco’s pages document an initial mobile announcement for Android and iOS, followed by versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The PC release announcement identifies Steam. These are documented platforms, not confirmation that the game is currently available for purchase or download in every region or storefront. - August 20, 2015: Bandai Namco Europe dates its mobile announcement to this day and lists Android and iOS.
- June 22, 2016: Bandai Namco America announced the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC versions as live.
