PlayStation Now was Sony’s former subscription gaming service, combining cloud streaming with downloads for supported games. Under the historical US rules, PS4 games could be streamed or downloaded, while PS3 games could only be streamed. PlayStation’s current equivalent is cloud streaming in the broader PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
That distinction matters because “PS Now” usually refers to a discontinued standalone product, while current subscribers should look at PlayStation Plus Premium. The modern service retains the central idea—playing selected games from Sony’s servers—but adds it to a wider membership whose catalog, devices, features, and pricing vary by country.
Key takeaways
- PlayStation Now was a subscription service that offered access to a changing library rather than permanent ownership of included games.
- Under the historical US rules, supported PS4 games could be streamed or downloaded, while PS3 games could only be streamed.
- PlayStation Now is no longer presented as a standalone subscription; cloud streaming is now part of PlayStation Plus Premium.
- PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and 15 Mbps for 1080p cloud streaming.
- Current cloud streaming is promoted for supported content on PS4, PS5, PC, and—in relevant cases—PS5 and PlayStation Portal.
What is PlayStation Now?
PlayStation Now was Sony’s former game-subscription service. Subscribers could play selected games from an online catalog using cloud streaming, and some supported PS4 titles could also be downloaded to a console. Access depended on an active membership, supported hardware, regional availability, and a catalog that could change over time.
PlayStation Now therefore differed from buying a game outright. A subscription granted access under the service’s terms, but games could be added, removed, restricted to certain access methods, or offered for limited periods. The historical US terms document those conditions in detail in the PS Now Usage Terms.

Is PS Now still available?
PlayStation Now is not currently presented by Sony as a standalone subscription. PlayStation’s current service pages organize the relevant cloud-gaming benefit inside PlayStation Plus Premium, a broader membership that also includes the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, Game Trials, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and other benefits. The current structure is described on the official PlayStation Plus service page.
The clearest modern explanation is that PS Now’s cloud-gaming role lives on through PlayStation Plus Premium, although PlayStation Plus Premium is not simply the old product name. It is a wider PlayStation Plus tier with additional benefits, and the exact catalog and features can vary by country, device, title, and time.
PlayStation describes the current arrangement as: “Cloud streaming is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit available on PS4 and PS5 consoles as well as PC.” See the official PlayStation Plus games page for current platform and catalog information.
How did PlayStation Now work?
PlayStation Now used two different delivery methods: remote cloud streaming and local downloading. The difference matters because streaming runs the game on Sony’s infrastructure, while a downloaded title runs from the console after installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCloud streaming
When a subscriber streamed a game, Sony’s remote service ran the game and sent interactive video and audio to the player. Controller inputs traveled back over the internet. The arrangement avoided a full game download, but gameplay quality depended on the connection and the service’s capacity.

Historical PS Now streaming had a maximum resolution of 1080p and stereo-only audio. The historical terms also warned that access could be delayed during high-traffic periods, and that streaming-specific features and availability could differ by title. These are documented historical PS Now conditions, not automatic rules for every current PlayStation Plus Premium streaming session.
PlayStation’s current cloud-streaming page explains the basic benefit this way: “A PlayStation Plus Premium membership gives you access to Cloud Streaming, which lets you play a selection of games without having to download and install them.” Current title availability remains subject to region, tier, device, and individual game support; consult the official cloud-streaming information before assuming that a particular game is playable.
Downloads
Under the historical US PS Now terms, supported PS4 games—including remastered PS2 games—could be streamed or downloaded to a compatible console. PS3 games were streaming-only. Sony’s terms state: “PS3 games may only be played via streaming.”

Sony’s historical wording was: “You can play downloaded games offline, but you need to connect to the internet once a week to validate your PS Now membership.” This meant downloading reduced the need for a continuous connection during play, but it did not turn subscription access into permanent ownership.
What replaced PlayStation Now?
PlayStation Plus Premium replaced the standalone PS Now model in current PlayStation service positioning. PlayStation Plus Premium combines cloud streaming with a broader subscription package rather than offering cloud gaming as a separate PS Now plan.

|---|---|---|
| Historical PlayStation Now | Cloud streaming plus downloads for supported PS4 and remastered PS2 games | Active subscription; PS3 games were streaming-only under the historical US terms |
| Current PlayStation Plus Premium | Cloud streaming, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, Game Trials, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and other benefits | Active Premium membership, supported title, compatible device, and regional availability |

The comparison between historical PS Now and current Premium is based on Sony’s historical legal terms and current service descriptions. Catalog contents, supported features, and access conditions can change, so current claims should be checked against the PlayStation Plus support page.
What internet speed do you need for PlayStation cloud gaming?
PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum internet connection speed for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are minimum service requirements, not a guarantee of perfect image quality or input responsiveness.

Streaming requires an internet connection while the game is being played. Downloaded gameplay follows a different model, although the historical PS Now rules still required weekly membership validation.
| Requirement or behavior | Cloud streaming | Downloaded/local gameplay |
|---|---|---|
| Connection during play | Requires a suitable connection throughout the session | Historical PS Now downloads could be played offline after download |
| Minimum listed speed | 5 Mbps; PlayStation lists 15 Mbps for 1080p | Download time depends on the connection and game size |
| Storage | Avoids downloading and installing the streamed title | Uses console storage and may require installation or updates |
| Historical quality limit | Up to 1080p and stereo audio under the historical PS Now terms | Not subject to that historical streaming cap |
| Subscription validation | Requires an active subscription during access | Historical downloads required an internet connection once a week to validate membership |
The current speed figures come from PlayStation’s official games and cloud-streaming requirements. The offline and weekly-validation details apply specifically to the historical US PS Now terms.
Which devices supported PS Now or support current cloud streaming?
Current PlayStation pages identify cloud streaming as a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit for PS4, PS5, and PC. PlayStation also promotes supported cloud-streaming content on PS5 and PlayStation Portal. Device support does not mean that every catalog game works on every device.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
PS5 is the strongest physical-product fit for readers evaluating the current PlayStation experience because Sony specifically promotes cloud streaming to PS5 and PlayStation Portal for supported content, including games that can be played without downloading or installing them. PC streaming has its own requirements, so PC users should check Sony’s current platform guidance rather than applying console assumptions.
What were the main limitations of historical PS Now?
Historical PS Now terms included several restrictions that explain why streaming was not identical to local play or game ownership:
- Catalog games and features could change or be withdrawn.
- Some games were available only for limited periods.
- Streaming access could involve waiting during periods of high traffic.
- Streaming was limited to 1080p maximum resolution and stereo audio.
- Compatible downloadable content was not supported in the same way as with downloaded or disc-based games.
- Streaming games did not provide access to in-game stores.
- Streaming games did not support Share Play, recording, or broadcasting under the historical terms.
- The same account could not stream or download games on two different devices simultaneously.
These limitations belong to the historical US PS Now rules. They should not be copied wholesale onto every modern PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming feature without checking the current terms for the specific game, device, and region.

Should you use cloud streaming or download a game?
Cloud streaming is most useful when avoiding a large download matters more than having the most predictable local-play experience. Streaming can also help on supported devices that lack enough available storage, but image quality and responsiveness remain dependent on the network and the title’s support.
Downloading is generally the more practical historical PS Now choice for a supported PS4 game when a player wants offline play or less dependence on continuous network quality. The download still required weekly subscription validation under the historical US terms, and downloading consumed console storage.
Buying a game outright is a different access model. A purchase is tied to the purchased title and platform rules, whereas a subscription depends on continued membership and catalog availability. Cloud streaming is also not guaranteed merely because a game exists on PlayStation.
