PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaler for supported PS5 Pro games. It reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a game image rendered at a lower internal resolution, which can reduce the work required to render every pixel and give developers more room to balance image quality, frame rate, and other graphics effects. It is not available in every game, and it does not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate.
Sony announced a separate name for its base-console technology in October 2026: QSSR, a distinct AI-upscaling performance tier for PS5. PSSR remains the PS5 Pro feature.

How does PSSR upscaling work?
A game does not always render each frame at the resolution sent to the display. Instead, it can render an image at a lower internal resolution, then use an upscaler to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Sony says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. The public descriptions do not provide a full technical specification of PSSR’s runtime algorithm.
Ubisoft gives a simple illustration: an image rendered at 1080p could be upscaled to 2160p. That is an example of the process, not a fixed input and output resolution for every PSSR game or scene. Ubisoft explains that AI upscalers draw on learned behavior to reconstruct an image; this does not mean AI upscaling is always better than other methods.

Rendering fewer pixels can reduce GPU load. Developers may use the extra headroom to target a higher frame rate or spend more GPU resources elsewhere. A game may also use dynamic resolution scaling, lowering its internal resolution in demanding scenes and raising it when more GPU capacity is available. These are game-specific design choices, not settings dictated universally by PSSR.
Which consoles and games support PSSR?
PSSR is a PS5 Pro capability, and a game must support it. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement says enhanced features are available only in select enhanced PS5 games and vary by title. Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles; that is Sony’s figure as of that date, not a current guarantee about any particular game.
For games that already support PSSR, Sony said in February 2026 that the upgraded version could be enabled through an optional PS5 Pro system setting. A title may instead integrate the upgraded version directly. Whether either option is available depends on the game and its implementation. Check the individual game’s current update information for support details.
PSSR and QSSR are not interchangeable names
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate AI-upscaling performance tier for the base PS5. Sony described a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for PS5 performance. The first announced QSSR games were Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony’s naming distinguishes this base-PS5 tier from PSSR on PS5 Pro.
What can PSSR change about image quality and performance?
Upscaling is one part of a game’s rendering budget, not a promise of a specific frame rate or native output resolution. The result depends on the developer’s choices, including the internal render resolution, target frame rate, graphics mode, and how the upscaler is used. Reconstruction can affect clarity and may introduce visible artifacts, so a higher-resolution output should not be confused with rendering every output pixel natively.

Sony says its upgraded PSSR improves image stability and fine detail in supported games. Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto has said the newer version responds quickly to visibility changes and improves temporal stability. Ubisoft developers have described their PSSR implementation as more stable than TAA in their assessment and said it reduced shimmering. These are vendor and developer observations about particular implementations, not a standardized comparison across games.
What to compare when a game offers graphics modes
If a title provides more than one mode, compare the experience in that game rather than assuming PSSR always wins. Useful factors include:
- Internal resolution and output: A high output resolution does not reveal the resolution at which the game rendered the image before upscaling.
- Detail and stability in motion: Inspect fine textures, edges, and moving objects, where reconstruction and temporal stability can be noticeable.
- Frame-rate target: Check the mode’s stated target and how consistently the game maintains it; PSSR alone does not determine performance.
- Artifacts: Look for issues such as shimmer or ghosting in the specific title and scenes you play.
- Available controls: Some choices may be exposed as in-game modes; the upgraded PSSR may also be controlled through an optional PS5 Pro system setting for supported games.
The available official descriptions do not establish a universal PSSR advantage over native rendering, TAA, or other upscalers. The practical result is title-specific.
Does PSSR mean a game is rendered at native 4K?
No. PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution render when a game uses it that way. The display output may be 4K, for example, without every pixel having been rendered natively at 4K. The internal resolution and upscaling behavior can also vary by game, mode, and scene.
