How to Check Whether a Steam Deck Game Is Using the Right Shader Cache

Steam Deck lets you inspect a game’s selected compatibility tool, but it does not show a definitive per-game check that confirms the right shader cache loaded.

You can check which Steam Play compatibility tool a game is set to use in Steam Deck’s Library, but Steam does not provide a documented indicator that confirms a game loaded the “right” shader-cache file. A shader download or a “Processing Vulkan shaders” message is evidence of cache-related activity—not proof that a specific cache matches the game and your current software.

Check the game’s compatibility tool in Steam

  1. Open the game in your Steam Library.

  2. Open Properties, then select Compatibility.

  3. Check whether Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool is enabled. If it is, note the selected tool.

This setting tells you which compatibility tool Steam is set to use; it does not verify which shader-cache artifact the game loaded. Valve documents the setting as a way to enable Proton for a specific game in its Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.

Proton lets Steam run Windows-only games on Linux using Wine. Valve says most users should use the Proton version supplied by the Steam client. If you are not troubleshooting a game problem, the mere presence of a shader cache is not a reason to force a different compatibility tool. When Proton troubleshooting is appropriate, Valve recommends trying the latest Proton version for that Steam app; that is not a claim that one release is right for every game. See the Proton repository.

What shader-cache activity can—and cannot—tell you

A shader download, a “Processing Vulkan shaders” step, or files in a shader-cache directory can show that Steam or the game is doing cache-related work. None of those observations alone establishes that the game used the correct cache for its title and current software state.

Valve’s March 4, 2022 Steam Client Update noted changes to when Proton shader caches download and said stale shader-cache data is deleted after GPU or driver changes. That dated changelog confirms that software and graphics changes can affect cache handling; it is not a complete description of every current Steam Deck cache behavior.

Use repeat launches as a limited clue

If “Processing Vulkan shaders” takes less time on a later launch, that is consistent with some work having been cached. It still does not prove a particular cache file matched or was loaded. A Valve Proton issue includes a user report of this launch message, but the report is not an official diagnostic rule or a guarantee of what a shorter processing step means.

Treat cache-folder contents as clues, not a verdict

A file listing cannot reliably tell you which cache the game actively used. A Valve-hosted issue report describes repeated .foz files in a shader-cache path for non-Steam games on one Deck setup. That report does not establish that all games use that path, that duplicates mean something is broken, or that inspecting the files identifies the active cache.

Do not delete cache files as a way to verify correctness. The available Valve guidance does not provide a universal cache-repair procedure, and removing files would not confirm which artifact was previously in use.

Troubleshoot a persistent problem one change at a time

If a game has a specific performance or stability problem, first record what is happening and what changed around the time it began. Valve’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking for Steam system updates when addressing app stability or performance issues, and supports trying a Proton version or adjusting graphics settings as troubleshooting steps.

Without the game title, its selected compatibility tool, and the symptom, a game-specific diagnosis is not possible. Valve’s public documentation reviewed here does not identify a per-game indicator for confirming that the “right” shader cache was loaded.
