PvE means player versus environment: gameplay in which you face opponents or challenges controlled by the game, usually AI-controlled enemies, rather than competing directly against other players. PvE can be played alone or cooperatively with other people.

What does “environment” mean in PvE?

Here, “environment” means the game-controlled opposition and challenges—not just the terrain or scenery. Those challenges can include AI opponents, enemy waves, and objectives run by the game. Epic’s Fortnite glossary defines PvE as play against AI-controlled opponents.

Can PvE be multiplayer?

Yes. PvE describes who or what you are fighting, not whether you play alone. You can take on game-controlled enemies solo or team up with other players to do so. In The Division, for example, Ubisoft describes Resistance as a team mode in which players fight successive waves of increasingly difficult enemies. The players cooperate; the game supplies the opposition. See Ubisoft’s glossary of terms for The Division.

PvE vs. PvP

Term Source of opposition What players do
PvE The game, typically through AI-controlled opponents or game-run challenges Fight enemies or complete objectives alone or with teammates
PvP Other players Compete against one another

The labels describe a mode or type of gameplay, not necessarily the whole game. In The Division, Ubisoft distinguishes PvE and PvP areas and describes the Dark Zone as an area where both can occur. That is an example from that game, not a rule that applies to every title. PlayStation’s gaming glossary also lists the PvE and PvP terms.

Quick example

If you and a friend join a mission to defeat enemies controlled by the game, you are playing PvE together. If you instead fight one another, that is PvP. A game may offer either kind of play, both in separate modes, or—in some cases—a mix within the same area.
