“Rule 2” in Rocket League has no single agreed meaning. Depending on the context, players may mean keeping the ball in the air after the clock reaches 0:00, or the kickoff convention that the player on the left goes first. These are community customs, not consistently numbered official rules.
What does Rule 2 mean at 0:00?
When players are talking about the end of a match, “Rule 2” can mean trying to keep the ball airborne after the clock reaches 0:00. The match continues while the ball is in play, so players may keep it up rather than let it touch the ground. The Global Gaming guide uses Rule #2 for this custom and identifies it as a community rule: What is Rule #1 and #2 in Rocket League [The Final Answer].
A Reddit discussion also uses the label for keeping the ball up after zero seconds: discussion of keeping the ball up after zero seconds.
What does Rule 2 mean at kickoff?
In a kickoff discussion, “Rule 2” may instead refer to the etiquette that the player on the left takes the kickoff. Players may also account for a teammate calling a different play or being closer to the ball, so it is best treated as a convention rather than an automatic obligation. A Reddit thread asking for the definition uses the term in this kickoff context: “Whats rule 2 of rocket league?”.

How can you tell which meaning someone intends?
- Match clock at 0:00, ball still airborne: they likely mean the keep-it-up convention.
- Players setting up for kickoff: they likely mean left-goes-first etiquette.
Numbering alone is not a reliable clue. Players have listed keeping the ball in play at zero, remaining locked in a Rule 1, and left-goes kickoff as separate conventions, while disagreeing about which number belongs to each: a discussion of competing rule numbers. Another thread shows players applying “Rule 2” to a different car interaction, which reinforces that the label can vary: discussion of another proposed rule number.
If you are explaining a play, name the behavior—“keep the ball up at 0:00” or “left takes kickoff”—instead of relying on the number. That avoids confusion between players using different versions of the community shorthand.
