Your site shares a physical server’s CPU, memory, and storage with other customers, while the hosting company manages the operating system and enforces usage limits. A virtual private server (VPS) puts your site in a virtual machine with allocated, isolated resources, its own kernel, and normally root or SSH access. Upgrade when evidence shows that pooled resources or host restrictions are blocking you—not simply because a VPS sounds more powerful.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What shared hosting means
On a shared plan, one physical server serves many unrelated websites. CPU time, RAM, disk capacity, and other server resources are pooled. The host controls the operating system, web server, security updates, and available software, then applies limits so one account cannot consume the machine.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That arrangement keeps administration simple. You normally manage your site through a control panel, upload files, configure a database, and install only the applications the host supports. You do not patch the kernel or maintain the underlying server. The trade-off is that another account’s traffic or workload can compete for capacity, and you cannot change settings that the host has kept outside customer control.
For a gaming audience, shared hosting can suit a game news site, clan or guild page, tournament registration site, wiki, mod documentation, or a small community forum. It is a web-hosting environment, not automatically a place to run a persistent multiplayer game server, voice server, custom daemon, or other long-running process. Those workloads may be prohibited even when an account appears to have spare storage.

What a VPS changes
A VPS divides one physical server into separate virtual machines. Your machine receives defined virtual CPU (vCPU), RAM, and storage allocations that are isolated from other tenants at the virtualization layer. Each VPS runs its own kernel, so it behaves more like an independent server than an account inside someone else’s operating system.
Most VPS products provide root or SSH access. You can install a required runtime, database version, game panel, monitoring agent, scheduled worker, or other software that a shared host does not offer. You also choose more of the web server, firewall, backup, and logging configuration.

That control transfers responsibility to you. On an unmanaged VPS, you maintain the operating system, packages, users, firewall rules, backups, certificates, and incident response. A managed VPS provider can handle some or all of that work, but management is a service level rather than a property of virtualization itself. Confirm exactly what patching, backups, monitoring, and emergency support are included.
Shared hosting vs. VPS at a glance
| Concern | Shared hosting | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| CPU, RAM, and storage | Pooled among many customer accounts; limits are enforced by the host. | vCPU, RAM, and storage are allocated to a virtual machine and isolated from other tenants. |
| Operating system | Managed by the host; customers normally cannot alter the kernel. | Each VPS runs its own kernel and operating-system instance. |
| Software and access | Host-managed software and control-panel access; only supported applications can be installed. | Root or SSH access usually permits custom software and configuration. |
| Maintenance | Low customer burden because the host runs the server. | You maintain it, or pay for a managed service with defined responsibilities. |
| Isolation | Accounts share the machine’s underlying resources. | Workloads are separated at the virtual-machine layer, though the physical host is still shared. |
| Price direction | Generally the less expensive option. | Generally costs more; management, backups, storage, and support can add to the bill. Exact prices vary by provider, region, and specification. |
When shared hosting is still the right choice
A modest website with predictable demand
If visits, database activity, and background jobs fit within the plan’s published limits, shared hosting avoids the operational work of running a server. A static site, small content-management installation, or community page often gains little from root access it will never use.

A site whose software matches the host’s stack
Stay on shared hosting when the required language versions, database engine, extensions, scheduled tasks, and upload limits are already available. Moving solely for theoretical flexibility adds migration risk without solving a present problem.
You do not have server-administration capacity
A VPS is not maintenance-free. If nobody can apply security updates, investigate alerts, restore backups, and recover a misconfiguration, the simpler shared environment—or a genuinely managed VPS with those duties spelled out—is safer.
When to upgrade from shared hosting to a VPS
Use a specific trigger, not a vague feeling that your site has outgrown its plan. Several signals can occur together, but one strong operational constraint can justify a move.
Your host sends a resource warning
CPU throttling, memory-limit notices, process-count errors, inode or storage alerts, and repeated bandwidth warnings are the clearest evidence. Save the notices and note when they occur. A warning during a short, unusual event may call for optimization; a recurring warning during normal traffic indicates that pooled capacity is becoming a constraint.

You need software or access the plan forbids
Upgrade when a required runtime, extension, database version, kernel feature, persistent process, container, firewall rule, or system service cannot be installed on shared hosting. Root or SSH access may be the actual requirement. Ask the host for a written confirmation before migrating; a VPS still has provider policies and resource limits.
Your workload is no longer only a website
Queue workers, scheduled data processing, APIs, staging environments, bots, telemetry collectors, and other continuously running services need controls that shared plans commonly restrict. A VPS can host these workloads if its CPU, memory, storage, network policy, and operating-system support match the application.

Slow page loads, timeouts or downtime during traffic spikes, sluggish checkout, and slow database operations are secondary signs that the current environment is inadequate. First separate an application problem from a hosting-capacity problem: an inefficient query, oversized images, a broken plug-in, or missing caching can be slow on any server.
Your security or support model has changed
Root access can help you implement a required control, but it also creates work. If you need custom logging, a particular security agent, network rule, or incident process that shared hosting cannot support, a VPS may be appropriate. Conversely, a VPS is a poor upgrade if you cannot operate it securely.

Checks to complete before buying a VPS
Confirm that the proposed move addresses the cause rather than hiding an application defect. Work through these checks in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Collect the evidence. Record the host’s resource warnings, timestamps, response-time measurements, error logs, traffic peaks, and the pages or jobs affected.
- Check traffic and workload shape. Distinguish a brief event—such as a tournament announcement—from a sustained increase. Identify scheduled tasks, database-heavy requests, uploads, and background processes.
- Review CPU, RAM, storage, and process limits. Compare actual usage with the plan’s limits, including less obvious constraints such as simultaneous processes, file counts, database connections, and disk I/O.
- Test application causes. Enable appropriate caching, optimize heavy queries, compress media, remove failing extensions, and update supported software where safe. Do not treat a VPS as a substitute for fixing an inefficient application.
- List the access and software requirements. Write down the exact package, runtime, service, port, scheduled job, or administrative permission that shared hosting cannot provide.
- Price the operational work. Include backups, monitoring, security updates, control-panel licensing, migration help, and managed support—not only the advertised VPS resource bundle.
- Define a rollback plan. Keep the existing site available until the replacement has been tested and DNS changes can be reversed.
Managed or unmanaged VPS?
Unmanaged VPS
An unmanaged instance gives maximum control and usually the lowest service overhead, but you are responsible for patching, hardening SSH, configuring a firewall, renewing certificates, monitoring disk usage, testing backups, and recovering from failures. It is suitable only when someone on your team can perform those tasks consistently.
Managed VPS
A managed service can reduce administration by taking responsibility for agreed maintenance and support. “Managed” is not a universal specification: ask whether the provider patches the operating system, monitors availability, supplies off-site backups, restores files, handles malware incidents, and supports your chosen software. Clarify response times and what remains your responsibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost and capacity planning
Shared plans are generally cheaper because one managed server supports many accounts. VPS plans cost more, and a managed tier, automated backups, additional storage, traffic, control panels, or premium support can increase the recurring bill. There is no reliable universal price range: compare like-for-like vCPU, RAM, storage type, transfer allowance, backup retention, region, and support.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Start with the smallest VPS that leaves measured headroom for ordinary peaks, then monitor CPU, memory, disk space, I/O, and application response times. Avoid choosing a large instance merely to compensate for unknown requirements; right-sizing is easier after you have real usage data.
Compliance: a VPS is not automatically PCI compliant
PCI DSS obligations depend on what your business handles and on the hosting provider’s role. The PCI Security Standards Council says Appendix A1 applies to multi-tenant service providers whose customers operate in shared services environments; it is not intended for all or most third-party service providers. Examples include hosting multiple entities on one shared server and web-based hosting services.
PCI DSS v3.2.1 called this section “Additional PCI DSS Requirements for Shared Hosting Providers.” PCI DSS v4.0 renamed it “Additional PCI DSS Requirements for Multi-Tenant Service Providers.” Secondary explanations of PCI DSS v4.0 describe logical separation of customer environments and penetration testing of that separation every six months for providers in scope; confirm the exact obligation in the applicable PCI DSS v4.0.1 documentation.
Moving to a VPS does not, by itself, make a merchant compliant. Determine whether the provider is a multi-tenant service provider, which controls it attests to, and how your payment flow handles cardholder data. Your own systems, integrations, policies, and scope still determine the merchant’s responsibilities.
Quick Recap
A practical migration sequence
- Inventory the current account. Record domains, DNS records, databases, cron jobs, mail settings, certificates, environment variables, uploads, and external integrations.
- Select the VPS specification and responsibility model. Match measured demand and required software, and document who patches, backs up, monitors, and responds to incidents.
- Build a test copy. Install the required operating system and application stack, restore a recent database and files, and restrict the test instance while credentials and DNS are being checked.
- Validate functionality. Test login, registration, forms, payment hand-offs, database writes, scheduled jobs, uploads, APIs, email delivery, HTTPS, and any game-community tools. Test under an expected peak rather than only loading the home page.
- Reduce DNS time-to-live before the cutover. Make the change early enough that resolvers can refresh the record, while keeping the old account intact.
- Freeze writes and synchronize. Put the site in maintenance mode if necessary, copy the final database and files, then verify permissions and configuration on the VPS.
- Switch DNS and monitor. Watch error logs, resource graphs, response times, certificates, and background jobs. Keep the old environment available for the rollback period.
- Harden and document. Apply updates, remove unused accounts and ports, verify backups by restoring a file, and write down recovery steps before decommissioning the old plan.
Common upgrade mistakes
- Upgrading without measuring: A bigger server will not repair bad queries, unoptimized media, or a faulty extension.
- Confusing isolation with dedicated hardware: A VPS has virtual allocations but still resides on a physical host shared with other customers. Choose dedicated hosting only when sustained load, strict isolation, or guaranteed hardware justifies it.
- Ignoring administration: Root access increases the number of ways a server can be misconfigured or compromised.
- Comparing only headline resources: Two plans with the same nominal RAM can differ in storage performance, backup policy, network limits, support, and virtualization technology.
- Cutting DNS over too early: Without a tested copy and rollback path, a small configuration error becomes an outage.
- Assuming compliance follows the product name: Confirm provider attestations and your payment-data scope instead of treating “VPS” as a compliance certificate.
A simple decision rule
| Your situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| The site fits published limits, uses supported software, and has no recurring performance issue. | Stay on shared hosting and review usage periodically. |
| The host reports recurring resource exhaustion, but the application is otherwise healthy. | Measure the peak workload and compare optimization with a right-sized VPS. |
| You need root or SSH access, custom software, or persistent non-website services. | Move to a VPS whose policy and specification support those requirements. |
| You need isolation or guaranteed physical hardware for sustained demand or a defined control. | Evaluate dedicated hosting after confirming that a VPS cannot meet the requirement. |
| No one can maintain a server. | Keep shared hosting or budget for a managed VPS with explicit responsibilities. |
