What Is Somatic in D&D 5e? Gestures, Free Hands, and Spell Components Explained

In D&D 5e, somatic (S) is the gesture component of a spell and requires free use of at least one hand. Here is how it differs from verbal and material components.

In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, “somatic” (S) is the gesture component of a spell. To perform those gestures, a caster must have free use of at least one hand. That hand requirement is the core of the rule; the rest of the picture concerns material components, which are a separate requirement that can look similar at the table.

Where “S” appears in a spell entry

Spell descriptions list the components a spell requires as verbal (V), somatic (S), material (M), or some combination. Each letter marks a different requirement. The D&D Beyond Basic Rules (the 2014 rules text, covered in more detail below) state that a character who cannot provide any required component cannot cast that spell. A spell marked S therefore cannot be cast by a caster who cannot make the gestures, even if every other component is available.

What a somatic component asks of you

The rules describe spellcasting gestures as potentially forceful or intricate. In practical terms, the S component is physical movement of the hands, and the rules attach one condition to it: the caster must be able to use at least one hand freely.

The Somatic (S) subsection of D&D Beyond’s Basic Rules “Spellcasting” page states the requirement directly:

“If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.”

That sentence is attributed to the official rules text as published on D&D Beyond. The page’s copyright notice identifies Wizards of the Coast, and no individual author is credited for the rule wording.

How somatic differs from verbal and material components

The three component types are easy to blur, but each one has its own trigger for failure. The table below compares them using what the 2014 Basic Rules say.

Component Letter What it requires What the rules say can stop it
Verbal V Chanting or speaking the spell’s words Gagging, or a magical silence effect, prevents the verbal component
Somatic S Gestures made with the hands Having no free use of at least one hand
Material M A specified object, sometimes with a stated cost or a consumption condition Lacking the specified object, unless a component pouch or spellcasting focus can stand in for it under the eligibility rules

A spell with more than one component type has to satisfy each one. Solving the hand problem does not satisfy a verbal requirement, and vice versa.

Material components, component pouches, and focuses

Material components are where most confusion starts, because a spell can use a pouch or focus in place of a material and still require hands for gestures.

Which material components a pouch or focus can replace

The rules allow a component pouch or spellcasting focus to be used instead of specified material components in eligible cases. A pouch or focus does not cover every material. Check the spell entry: if the material has a stated cost or is consumed, the rules separately preserve that requirement, so the specific component must be supplied.

A consumed component must be supplied for each casting. A component with a specified cost still needs the particular item, not just a pouch. This is the one place where a physical accessory matters for a spell’s material requirement, and it does nothing for the gesture requirement.

Sharing a hand between a focus and gestures

The rules say the hand used to access material components or to hold a focus can also be the hand used for somatic components. This means a caster holding a focus does not automatically lose the ability to gesture with that hand.

That allowance has a limit. It does not turn the hand requirement into an optional one. The basic somatic rule still requires free use of at least one hand, so a focus in one hand is acceptable only as long as the hand that holds it is still usable for gestures.

When both hands are occupied: a casting checklist

Use these steps to work through a casting when the hands may be full. The steps follow the rule text above and do not add rulings the source does not provide.

  1. Read the spell entry and confirm whether it lists S. If it does not, the hand rule does not apply to that spell.
  2. Decide whether at least one hand is free for gestures, counting the hand that holds a focus, if that hand can also gesture.
  3. If a hand is free, the somatic component can be performed. Then check the verbal and material components separately.
  4. If no hand is free, the S component cannot be performed as written, and the spell cannot be cast under the basic rule.
  5. If the situation is not covered by the rules text, such as how quickly a hand can be freed from an item, agree on the outcome with your Dungeon Master before play continues.

The source passage does not address specific equipment such as shields or two-handed weapons, so a ruling for those cases belongs to the table rather than to this rule text.

Which version this covers

This explanation rests on the Spellcasting section of D&D Beyond’s Basic Rules, which are labeled for the 2014 rules and were posted August 5, 2016. Later printings and revisions of the game may word spellcasting differently. If your table uses a newer rulebook, check its spellcasting chapter before relying on the wording quoted above. The general meaning of S, a gesture component that requires a free hand, is the part most likely to carry over.

If you meant a particular spell or a specific equipment situation rather than the general term, the spell’s own entry and your Dungeon Master’s ruling will settle the question.
