Routine interruptions often last a few minutes to around 15–30 minutes, while Valve says planned downtime generally does not last more than about one hour. There is no guaranteed fixed start time every week.
What is Steam Maintenance Tuesday?
“Maintenance Tuesday” is a community nickname, not an official Valve product name or an all-day event. It usually refers to scheduled work on Steam’s backend systems, including login and authentication services, Connection Managers, the Store, Community features, game coordinators, and multiplayer-related infrastructure.

The work may include security patches, server operating-system or driver updates, hardware installation, capacity improvements, and server-code changes. Some maintenance produces no visible Steam client feature at all. Valve explains that scheduled downtime can be necessary for behind-the-scenes security, performance, and infrastructure work. Valve’s maintenance guidance also says that planned downtime is normally limited to approximately one hour.
This is separate from a Steam desktop-client update, a game patch, a publisher’s server maintenance, a sale, or an account penalty. Those events can occur around the same time and may cause similar symptoms.

When does Steam maintenance happen?
Tuesday is the customary weekly maintenance day, but it is not safe to assume that every Tuesday will cause a noticeable outage. Maintenance may be brief, affect only certain services or regions, or be almost invisible to some players. Unscheduled incidents can also happen on any day.
Valve says planned work is generally performed during its staff’s business hours in the Pacific Time zone. It may vary or stagger the timing to reduce disruption and avoid the highest-use periods. A practical description is: Steam’s weekly maintenance usually occurs on Tuesday afternoon or evening in North America, often around the late-afternoon Pacific Time window, but the exact start can shift.

This table is a planning guide, not an official Steam timetable. Team17 describes a Tuesday window beginning sometime between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific Time, while SteamDB describes the convention in different local-time terms. Those references are useful corroboration, but neither publishes Valve’s permanent master schedule. Team17’s support explanation specifically warns that unexpected delays are possible.

How long does Steam maintenance last?
Use a range rather than a precise promise:

Team17 gives an approximate duration of 30 minutes, subject to delays. Valve’s broader guidance says planned downtime normally does not exceed about one hour. Therefore, do not assume Steam will always return exactly 30 minutes after it goes offline.
Best rule: wait 15–30 minutes when the interruption begins during the normal Tuesday window. If Steam remains unavailable for substantially longer than an hour, or the problem occurs at an unusual time, investigate an extended outage, regional issue, ISP problem, or game-specific failure.
What stops working during maintenance?
The impact depends on which Steam components are being serviced. Possible symptoms include:
- Steam sign-in or authentication failures
- Store pages that fail to load
- Community, profile, Market, or inventory problems
- Friends lists and presence status not updating
- Game coordinators disconnecting
- Multiplayer matchmaking failing
- Online-dependent games refusing to launch
- Cloud synchronization being delayed
- Achievements and other server-side events appearing only after reconnection
Steam does not necessarily fail as one block. The Store may load while a particular game coordinator is unavailable. You may remain in a game while matchmaking, friends, authentication, or cloud services degrade. A game’s own publisher login and servers can also fail independently of Steam.

For example, Predecessor’s support documentation notes that Steam maintenance can disrupt multiplayer access while still allowing the game to launch. That pattern is common: launching a title does not prove that every online feature is available.
Can you still play Steam games?
Sometimes. A previously installed single-player game may work in Steam Offline Mode if it supports offline play, has been launched and prepared beforehand, and does not require a third-party or always-online authentication service.
Multiplayer games, matchmaking, server-hosted games, Steam authentication, cloud features, and online-only titles may not work. Some games launched through Steam require a separate publisher account or connection regardless of whether Steam itself is available.
Offline behavior is also game-dependent. Do not assume that cloud saves, achievements, leaderboards, or online inventory will update normally during maintenance. They may synchronize after Steam reconnects, but the result depends on the game and the service involved.
What to do if Steam is down on Tuesday
- Wait briefly. If it is Tuesday, the problem began recently, and several Steam services are affected, wait 15–30 minutes before making major changes.
- Check your internet generally. Open unrelated websites or use another online application. If everything else works, a Steam-side issue is more likely.
- Do not reinstall Steam immediately. Reinstalling, changing account settings, or repeatedly altering network configuration will not fix a short server-side maintenance window.
- Expect online games to disconnect. Active multiplayer sessions and matchmaking can fail while maintenance is underway.
- Restart Steam after service returns. Fully exit the client, reopen it, and try the game again. A stale session may not reconnect automatically.
- Check the game’s support channel if only one title is affected. The publisher’s servers, authentication, or game coordinator may be down even when Steam itself is operating.
- Escalate after the normal window. If the issue continues for about an hour or more, check service-status reports and begin local network troubleshooting.
Valve’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance identifies both Steam maintenance and local network or ISP problems as possible causes of persistent connection failures.

For component-level checks, SteamDB provides unofficial status tools for areas such as the Store, Community, Web API, client, and game coordinators: Is Steam Down? and Steam Server Status. Treat SteamDB as a practical third-party reference, not as Valve’s official incident system.
If Steam works in a browser but not in the client, or works on one connection but not another, suspect a local client, DNS, firewall, VPN, router, or ISP issue. If only one game fails while the Store and other games work, start with that game’s official status page rather than assuming Tuesday maintenance is responsible.

Does Maintenance Tuesday update the Steam client?
Not necessarily. Server maintenance can happen without a visible client update. Steam may also download a client update near the same time, but that is a separate event. A game patch, publisher maintenance, or client update can create similar connection or launch symptoms.

Will downloads resume afterward?

Are Steam achievements lost during maintenance?
