Steam Next Fest is a recurring, free-to-browse Steam event where players try demos of upcoming games, watch optional developer livestreams and wishlist titles they want to follow. Each demo is a separate preview chosen by its developer: its content, controls and availability can vary, and it may remain available after the festival—or be removed.
The next edition is Steam Next Fest: October 2026, scheduled for October 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT through October 26 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. The Press Preview begins October 8 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. Steam’s event page has the current schedule and deadlines.

What happens during Steam Next Fest?
Valve describes Next Fest as a weeklong event promoting upcoming games with playable demos. Players explore a festival page organized around game categories and tags, open individual game pages to learn about each demo, and download and play demos that interest them. Developers may also stream their games during the event, but livestreams are optional.

How do the demos work for players?
Each demo is its own preview
There is no standard Next Fest demo length or required amount of content. Developers decide what the preview includes, how it plays and what controls or system requirements it has. Check the individual game’s Steam page for its description and requirements rather than assuming every demo offers the same scope or setup.
When demos become available
A demo may be public before the festival, during the Press Preview, or shortly before the public event begins. For October 2026, participating demos must be publicly playable by the event’s start on October 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. A demo included in Press Preview is public; press sees what is publicly available at that time.

What happens after the event?
Next Fest ending does not automatically mean every demo disappears. The developer decides whether to keep a demo available or deactivate it afterward. Steam encourages developers to tell players if they plan to remove access, so check the game’s page and any developer notices if you want to play a particular demo.
October 2026 dates and deadlines
| Milestone | October 2026 schedule |
|---|---|
| Press Preview starts | October 8 at 10:00 a.m. PDT (UTC−7) |
| Public festival starts | October 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT (UTC−7) |

The registration deadline has passed as of October 7, 2026. Developers considering participation should check their Steamworks registration status or use Steam’s official support process; do not assume a new registration can be made. The edition page also lists earlier build-review and trailer milestones. Deadlines can differ by edition, so consult the October 2026 event page for the applicable details.

How developers participate
Check eligibility and choose an edition
For October 2026, an eligible title needs a Steamworks account in good standing, a published and public base-game store page, and an upcoming unreleased game that is not a prologue or short-form version of already released content. The game must have a publicly playable demo by the festival’s start, must not have participated in another Next Fest, and must remain unreleased until this edition ends. For this edition, that means the full game releases after October 26.
Each game can participate in only one Next Fest. Steam says developers may choose an edition earlier in development to seek feedback or one closer to launch to build interest. The practical choice depends on readiness: whether the team can prepare a stable, public demo and complete its review in time, and how the event fits the planned release.

Register and prepare a separate demo app
Developers register from the base game’s Steamworks setup, not from the demo. They create a separate demo-type app associated with the base game, then submit the demo build and required assets for review. For October 2026, the demo must be live by October 19 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. Steam recommends submitting well ahead of the event and releasing at least 30 minutes before the start to allow time to catch launch problems.
Choose categories and understand visibility
During registration, developers select one or two primary categories; Steam also uses the game’s store tags to organize discovery. A developer preview can help teams check where a title appears. Steam says visibility is randomized in most locations during the first few days, with exceptions for named lists and personalized sections. Later, some logged-in carousels are personalized using player behavior. Placement is not a guarantee of views, sales, wishlists or press coverage.

Decide whether to livestream
Livestreaming is optional. A team can take part with a demo without scheduling a stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Steam’s demo review does—and does not—check
Steam says build review checks that the demo runs and includes the features the developer has promised. It is not full quality assurance and does not look for most bugs. Review approval therefore is not a certification that a game is polished or bug-free. Developers may update a demo after review, but Steam says those later updates are not reviewed again. Steam’s Next Fest documentation explains the review limits and demo setup guidance.
How to choose which demos to try
Because demos are different from game to game, use the store page to decide whether a preview suits your time and setup. Check:
