Use a super-effective move. In the core series, Shedinja is Bug/Ghost and takes super-effective damage from Fire, Flying, Rock, Ghost, and Dark attacks. Its Ability, Wonder Guard, blocks almost everything else, so an ordinary attack that is not super effective will do nothing. Which of these moves you can actually use depends on the game you are playing and whether Shedinja is available in it at all.
The five attack types that can hit Shedinja
The official Pokédex entry for Shedinja lists Bug/Ghost as its typing and Fire, Flying, Rock, Ghost, and Dark as its weaknesses. Shedinja’s official Pokédex entry is the primary reference for those weaknesses. Any move of one of these five types that is super effective against Bug/Ghost will get through Wonder Guard.

| Attack type | Example move (core series) | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | Flamethrower | Super effective against the Bug half of Shedinja’s typing |
| Flying | Brave Bird | Super effective against the Bug half |
| Rock | Rock Slide | Super effective against the Bug half |
| Ghost | Shadow Ball | Super effective against the Ghost half |
| Dark | Dark Pulse | Super effective against the Ghost half |
These five types are a list of weaknesses, not a ranking. Nothing in the official Pokédex or the Smogon entry establishes one of them as the best answer. Pick the one your team can use reliably, and check the move’s accuracy, power, and any side effects against your situation.
Why Wonder Guard blocks everything else
Wonder Guard is Shedinja’s only Ability. The official Pokédex describes it this way: “Its mysterious power only lets supereffective moves hit the Pokémon.” Smogon’s description says that Wonder Guard allows only super-effective or indirect damage to affect Shedinja. That means a neutral or resisted Water, Normal, or Electric move can be used without effect, even at full power. Check the type chart before you commit a turn to a direct attack.
#1 Best Overall
Indirect damage: a second route, with limits
Smogon’s wording means that indirect damage can still affect Shedinja. Stealth Rock is one example that matters in competitive play, because it is a Rock-type hazard and Shedinja is weak to Rock. Other indirect sources, such as weather or status damage, can also reach it. The exact behavior depends on the game and generation, so do not assume a hazard or effect works the same way in every title. Look up the specific mechanic in the game you are playing before relying on it.
Check whether Shedinja is in your game
Before you plan a counter, confirm that Shedinja is available in your version. Smogon’s Scarlet/Violet entry labels Shedinja as a previous-generation Pokémon that is unavailable in Scarlet and Violet. It can be used only in non-standard National Dex formats in that game. If you are playing Scarlet or Violet in a standard format, the matchup does not apply. The Smogon Scarlet/Violet Shedinja entry lists its format status.
Pokémon GO is a different system
Pokémon GO has its own type-effectiveness rules. The core-series weakness list above should not be applied to it without checking. Niantic’s type effectiveness help page for Pokémon GO describes how battle type effectiveness works in that game.

A quick decision checklist
- Is Shedinja available in your game and format? If not, the matchup does not apply.
- Does your team have a Fire, Flying, Rock, Ghost, or Dark move that is super effective against Bug/Ghost?
- If not, are indirect sources such as a Rock-type hazard available in your format?
- Is your move’s accuracy and power enough to take a 1-HP target in one hit before it acts?
A useful way to read this list is that the first question decides whether the rest of it matters at all.
The Bottom Line
Use a Fire, Flying, Rock, Ghost, or Dark move, and confirm first that Shedinja is available in your game and format.
