The key difference is purpose: one shares the playing experience, while the other provides guidance. A video can be both if it shows gameplay and gives useful instructions.
What does “playthrough” mean?
A playthrough is a game being played from start to finish, or a recording of that experience. It may be shared for entertainment, and online creators often add live commentary. The Office québécois de la langue française’s 2024 terminology entry describes a video game playthrough as a video or series showing a player’s experience from beginning to end for entertainment. The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment also uses the term for playing and recording gameplay from start to finish, often with commentary.

A playthrough may be blind or guided, casual or completion-focused. The label alone does not tell you whether the player will explain every decision or show every optional area.

A walkthrough is guidance for someone trying to complete a level, solve a puzzle, defeat an enemy, or finish a game. It can be written or presented as a video. Ukie’s Glossary of Games Terminology defines it as “A description of the gameplay experience for a level or playthrough, intended to guide players who are unsure how to complete it.”
#1 Best Overall
Walkthroughs commonly organize advice by level, objective, puzzle, or sequence of steps, so a player can find help at the point where they are stuck. That organization is a tendency, not a rule: a walkthrough need not follow one specific format.
Playthrough vs. walkthrough
| Aspect | Playthrough | Walkthrough |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Share the experience of playing, often for entertainment. | Help someone make progress or complete a challenge. |
| Typical structure | Continuous gameplay, often from beginning to end. | Guidance organized around steps, levels, puzzles, or objectives. |
| What viewers expect | To watch someone play. | To learn what to do next or how to overcome a challenge. |
| Common formats | Recorded or streamed video; may include commentary. | Text, video, or a printed game-specific guide. |
These are practical distinctions, not strict rules. The Office québécois de la langue française distinguishes an entertainment-focused playthrough from a complete video guide intended to help players finish a game, solve puzzles, or defeat enemies. Ukie’s definition also allows a walkthrough to describe a level or a playthrough. So a creator who explains a route and gives actionable advice while playing may make a video that is both.
How to tell which one you need
- You want to watch the experience: choose a playthrough, especially if you want to see someone’s reactions, decisions, or full run.
- You are stuck and need a solution: choose a walkthrough, then look for one that names your game, level, puzzle, or objective.
- You want both: find a playthrough with clear instructions, or a walkthrough presented as gameplay.
For a printed reference, look for a strategy guide or walkthrough book made for the specific game. A general gaming book may not contain the steps you need. Printed guides are one format among several, not a different meaning of “walkthrough.”

Why the terms can overlap
Gaming labels are informal, and people do not always use them consistently. A creator may call a complete series a playthrough even when it includes advice; a viewer may call the same series a walkthrough because it helps them finish the game. Rather than relying only on the title, check the description, chapter labels, and whether the creator explains what to do.
Rank #3
If you publish gaming videos, describe the format directly: for example, “blind first playthrough,” “guided route,” or “completion walkthrough.” That tells viewers whether to expect an unspoiled experience, practical steps, or both.
