What Is TAS in Rocket League?

In Rocket League, TAS usually means a tool-assisted shot or sequence built with community software, not a play performed live at normal speed. Here is what the term covers and where its limits lie.

In Rocket League, TAS usually refers to a tool-assisted shot or gameplay sequence: a clip a creator builds with community software, using controlled inputs that can be replayed and refined. It is not a normal match moment performed live at full speed, and it is not an official game mode. The acronym comes from speedrunning, where TAS stands for tool-assisted speedrun, and Rocket League communities sometimes use the phrase “Tool Assisted Shot” for the same idea.

What TAS means in general

The broad term comes from speedrunning. The TASVideos glossary defines a tool-assisted speedrun (short: TAS) as “a speedrun that is made with use of tools.” That glossary names the kinds of tools involved: slow motion, pause, frame advance, precise timing, re-recording, and input editing. Together these let a person plan a run one input at a time and retry it until every frame is correct, which ordinary real-time play does not allow.

The TASVideos introduction frames the same concept as a community practice of producing recordings that show what is possible under precise control, rather than what a player can do at normal speed. Other games have their own TAS communities, so the term is not specific to Rocket League.

How TAS is used in Rocket League

In Rocket League, the most visible TAS tool is the community TAS Plugin listed on BakkesPlugins. The listing describes its purpose as creating custom shots and speedruns inside the game, and it runs in Freeplay or on a custom map. The current listed version is 1.1.0, with an update recorded on May 13, 2026, so check the listing for compatibility with your current game build before installing.

PlayStation DualSense™ Wireless Controller – Midnight Black - For PS5, PC, MAC & Mobile
  • Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
  • Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5

The typical creator workflow, as the plugin listing describes it, follows these steps:

  1. Load Freeplay or a custom map. The plugin works in these modes rather than in standard online matches.
  2. Create a named TAS from the current car and ball positions. This sets the starting state the sequence will be recorded from.
  3. Build the sequence through controlled inputs. The plugin’s listed features include controlled recording and replay, so the creator can record, replay, and adjust rather than attempt the shot once.
  4. Save the sequence. A saved sequence can be replayed to show the same result again.

A Rocket Sledge video from December 5, 2022 shows the same tool being used for a freestyle competition, and calls it a “Tool Assisted Speedrun (or Tool Assisted Shot) Plugin.” That video is a dated community example, not an official description, and the naming it uses is one of several in circulation.

Why the wording varies

The acronym is not expanded the same way everywhere. Speedrunning communities use “tool-assisted speedrun,” and Rocket League clips often call the result a “Tool Assisted Shot.” Both describe the same basic idea: a sequence made with tools rather than a single live attempt. If you see “TAS” in a clip title or comment thread, the writer most likely means one of these two phrases, but the surrounding context is the only reliable guide to which one.

Why TAS clips can look impossible

Frame advance, slow motion, and re-recording let a creator adjust timing and inputs in small increments and retry until the result is exactly right. A shot that looks impossible at full speed may be the product of many attempts with those tools, not a single performance. That is why a TAS clip should not be read as evidence that a player can execute the same sequence live.

BakkesMod, the mod framework that many Rocket League plugins depend on, was originally built to enhance Freeplay, and its SDK is commonly used for freeplay training and replay enhancements. Its SDK README documents that framework. It explains the ecosystem the plugin belongs to, but it does not decide whether any particular plugin is permitted in any given mode.

What is not established

The material available at the time of writing does not settle whether TAS-made content is allowed in online or ranked play. We did not find a current official statement on that question from Rocket League’s developer, and the plugin listing and community examples do not answer it. Treat any claim that TAS is permitted or banned in online matches as unverified unless it comes from the game’s own policy documentation.

One controller optimized for multiple genres without needing separate setups.
  • Feel Recoil, Acceleration, and Impact More Realistically: 4-motor vibration across both triggers and grips makes shooting, driving, crashing, and combat feel more immersive. Experience stronger recoil feedback in shooters and more realistic acceleration and road feel in racing games.
  • Quick In-Game Adjustments Without Interrupting Gameplay: Fine-tune vibration, switch profiles, remap buttons, or adjust volume directly on the controller while gaming. No need to pause the match or open software — perfect for players who constantly switch between FPS, RPG, racing, and multiplayer games.

Likewise, not every impressive Rocket League clip is a TAS. Without a tool-assisted label, a plugin context, or a creator’s description, there is no basis for calling a play tool-assisted.

Quick checks when you see “TAS”

Question Live play Tool-assisted (TAS)
How the sequence is produced Performed once in real time Built and refined with tools such as frame advance and re-recording
Where it is typically made Standard play, including online matches Freeplay or custom maps with the TAS Plugin, as listed
What the clip shows A repeatable human execution A controlled result that may not be reproducible live
Official status Part of the game Community method; no official mode, and online policy not established

When a clip or post is labeled TAS, look for the plugin name, a Freeplay or custom-map setting, or the creator’s description. Those cues tell you more than the acronym alone.
