The image, posted to Reddit in January 2025, pairs the wildly high rank with other unusual cards as its punchline.
Where did the 161 of Clubs meme come from?
The source is a Reddit post in r/balatro titled “i hope im doing this correctly,” published January 4, 2025. Its screenshot shows a hand containing ordinary cards alongside an 11 of Clubs, 12 of Hearts, 23 of Spades, and the 161 of Clubs. The sequence of increasingly implausible ranks is the joke. In a January 14, 2025 explainer, Insider Gaming’s Andrew Highton also described the image as modded content, rather than a leak of official game content. The post was marked “modded.” Read the Insider Gaming explainer.
Is the 161 of Clubs in the official game?
No. The cited explainer identifies the screenshot as modded, so the 161 of Clubs should not be mistaken for a standard card in the unmodified base game. It is an image from a modified run, not evidence of an official card or announcement.

A commenter in the original Reddit thread later suggested the mod is called UnStable. They also do not establish whether UnStable is currently available or compatible with current versions of Balatro. See the Reddit discussion.
