What Is the Best Race in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered?

No race is best for every build. Breton is a flexible magic-capable default, while High Elf, Orc, Wood Elf, Khajiit, and Dark Elf suit more specialized approaches.

There is no single best race in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered: the strongest pick depends on how you want to play. For a flexible character who can use magic and withstand it, Breton—particularly the Systres origin—is a strong default. Choose High Elf for the largest reported starting Magicka bonus, Orc for a melee-focused character, Wood Elf for a stealth archer, Khajiit for close-range stealth, or Dark Elf for a mixed-combat approach. These are guide-backed recommendations, not results from a tested race ranking.

Quick picks by playstyle

Playstyle Suggested race and origin Why it fits Trade-off or qualification
Flexible, magic-capable character Breton, especially Systres PCGamesN reports a Magicka bonus, magic resistance, and a once-per-day defensive ability; Beebom also favors Breton as a balanced magic-oriented choice. A versatile guide-backed pick, not a universal winner.
Maximum starting Magicka High Elf, Summerset Isle PCGamesN reports a 100 Magicka bonus alongside strong Intelligence and Willpower attributes. The same guide reports 25% weaknesses to fire, frost, and shock.
Melee Orc, Stronghold PCGamesN recommends Orc for melee. This is a guide recommendation; it does not mean other races cannot work well in melee.
Ranged combat or stealth archery Wood Elf, Reaper’s March PCGamesN recommends Wood Elf for ranged builds and calls it the stronger stealth-archer option. The guide also describes Khajiit and Dark Elf as viable ranged alternatives.
Close-range stealth Khajiit, Anequina PCGamesN cites Sneak, Night-Eye, and Demoralize as reasons to pick Khajiit for melee-oriented stealth. This is a different niche from Wood Elf’s stealth-archer recommendation.
Mixed combat Dark Elf, Vvardenfell PCGamesN highlights blade, destruction, and marksman strengths in its all-rounder recommendation. Beebom instead presents Breton as an all-rounder, showing that the label depends on the build being considered.

Why Breton is a useful default

If you are undecided and want a character with room to use spells without leaning entirely into a fragile mage build, Breton is a sensible starting point. PCGamesN reports that Systres Breton has a 50-point Magicka bonus, 50% magic resistance, and Dragon Skin, an ability usable once per day. Beebom also describes Breton as a balanced, magic-oriented choice. These values are reported by those guides, rather than an official Bethesda race-stat table in the sources cited here.

That defensive profile makes Breton a flexible recommendation, not proof that it outperforms every race. PCGamesN calls Dark Elf its all-rounder, pointing to sword, bow, and destruction strengths, while Beebom favors Breton for balance around magic. The useful distinction is what you want your generalist to do: lean into spellcasting and resistance with Breton, or spread combat across weapons and destruction with Dark Elf.

When another race is a better fit

High Elf for a mage who wants more starting Magicka

For Summerset Isle High Elves, PCGamesN reports 50 Intelligence, 45 Willpower, and a 100-point Magicka bonus. The cost is a reported 25% weakness to each of fire, frost, and shock. If you want the larger starting Magicka pool, that is a clear trade-off to weigh against Breton’s reported magic resistance; the guide itself describes Systres Breton as the more durable alternative.

Orc for a melee-focused character

PCGamesN’s melee recommendation is Orc from Stronghold. Treat this as a focused suggestion rather than a restriction: the guide’s pick does not establish that other races are poor at close combat.

Wood Elf for stealth archery

PCGamesN recommends Wood Elf from Reaper’s March for ranged play and specifically calls it the better stealth-archer choice. The same guide recognizes Khajiit and Dark Elf as possible ranged alternatives, so Wood Elf is the cited specialist pick, not the only workable option.

Khajiit for close-range stealth

For Khajiit from Anequina, PCGamesN reports 50 Agility, +10 Sneak, Night-Eye, and Demoralize. It recommends the combination for melee-oriented stealth and cites the origin’s added Strength in that rationale. If you picture sneaking in close rather than relying on a bow, this is the more directly matched recommendation.

Dark Elf for a mixed-combat approach

PCGamesN’s Vvardenfell Dark Elf recommendation is its all-rounder option, with blade, destruction, and marksman among the cited strengths. The guide also reports fire resistance and an ancestral ghost summon usable once per day. Those are guide-reported details, not a Bethesda-published ranking; Beebom’s different all-rounder choice is Breton.

Choose an origin as well as a race

Race is only part of the selection. PCGamesN says each race has two origins with different attribute bonuses, and Beebom also identifies two origins per race as a remaster addition. Compare the specific origin options shown on the character-creation screen for the race you choose; the available sources do not establish a complete, independently checked table of every race-origin bonus.

What the remaster changes—and what that does not prove

Bethesda says the remaster redesigned the leveling system and recorded new dialogue, including unique voices for represented races. That means it is not simply a visual update, but those statements do not establish that every race statistic is different from the 2006 game. The race and ability figures above should therefore be read as values reported by the named gameplay guides, not as independently verified remaster-wide measurements.
