Best armor depends on your build
Heavy armor favors protection at the cost of weight; light armor weighs less but offers less protection. Bethesda lists Heavy Armor and Light Armor as separate skills governing protection from their respective armor types. In practical terms, choose the class that matches the skill you are developing rather than treating every set as part of one universal ranking.

Bethesda Softworks’ official manual explains: “Each piece of armor you wear adds to your overall protection, or ‘armor rating.’” A full set uses a helm, cuirass, greaves, boots, and gauntlets or bracers. Armor condition matters too: when a piece reaches zero condition, it becomes unusable, so keep your equipment repaired.

When to choose each set
Daedric: a base-game heavy-armor pick
If your character uses Heavy Armor and you are playing the original base game, Daedric is a straightforward top-tier choice. Its weight makes it a poor fit for a character prioritizing light armor; the class and skill distinction matters more than trying to crown one set for everyone.
Glass: a base-game light-armor pick
For a Light Armor character in the original base game, Glass is a strong recommendation. It follows the lighter-class trade-off: less weight than heavy armor, with less protection than the heavy-armor approach.

Madness and Amber: Remastered options with Shivering Isles
GamingBolt’s May 8, 2025 Remastered guide describes Madness as a heavy-class pinnacle and Amber as a light-class pinnacle. It says the sets are forged from their respective ores in the Shivering Isles and can be enhanced with matching matrices. Those options depend on having access to that content; do not assume their acquisition details apply to the original game.

- Amber and Madness: The guide places acquisition in the Shivering Isles, reached through the quest “A Door in Niben Bay.” It says the sets are forged from Amber or Madness ore and enhanced with matching matrices.
Confirm your edition, installed content, and character progression before pursuing these routes. Bethesda also notes that enemies scale with player level, and that improving major and minor skills advances character level; gear progression therefore takes place alongside a changing level context.

Fin Gleam is a unique enchanted Glass helmet described by StrategyWiki as lying underwater west of Anvil. It provides water-breathing and night-eye effects. It can be a useful individual piece, but finding a distinctive helmet does not make it the best complete armor set.

How to make the final choice
- Choose Heavy Armor or Light Armor based on the skill and play style you want to develop.
- Use Daedric or Glass as the base-game shortlist for the original game.
- Consider Madness or Amber only when playing Remastered with Shivering Isles access.
- Keep the pieces repaired so a zero-condition item does not become unusable.
