Mine at roughly Y=11–15: use strip mining for a simple, controlled approach, or use beds or TNT to expose more netherrack if you can manage explosions and the lava they may uncover. Bastion-remnant chests offer an exploration-based alternative, but it is more dangerous.
Where to look and what to expect
Ancient Debris generates underground in the Nether and must be mined; it does not generate exposed to air, according to Minecraft’s Taking Inventory: Netherite Scrap. Y=15 is a common practical target, while Minecraft’s official guide recommends bed tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15. Treat Y=11–15 as a useful working range, not a guarantee of the best yield in every edition, version, or mining pattern.
The official guide calls Ancient Debris “really, really, really rare.” It does not give a version-specific rate or compare mining methods in a controlled test, so no method can be named as objectively fastest for every player.
Choose a method that suits your supplies and risk tolerance
| Method | Best fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Strip mining | You want a straightforward approach without deliberately setting off explosives. | Requires more manual digging and still calls for caution around lava. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial describes it as a potential, straightforward method. |
| Bed mining | You have beds and can trigger them from behind cover. | Explosions can injure you; you must manage blast safety and lava. The Wiki tutorial describes beds as cheaper than other explosives, but that does not make the method risk-free. |
| TNT mining | You have TNT and want blasts to clear netherrack. | Ancient Debris can survive the blast, but TNT may open lava pockets that flow into the excavation. |
| Bastion exploration | You prefer searching structures to digging tunnels. | Minecraft describes this route as swifter but more dangerous; chest contents are not a predictable mining yield. |
How to mine with beds
Beds explode when used in the Nether. Minecraft’s official How To Find Ancient Debris recommends making tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15, putting a bed at each tunnel’s end, and using a block for protection. Its advice is to have full health and plenty of food because the blast can hurt you.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
- Dig a main tunnel in the Nether within the Y=11–15 working range.
- Dig short side tunnels perpendicular to the main tunnel, following the pattern in the Minecraft Wiki tutorial. The tutorial gives a pattern, not a universally optimal layout.
- Place a bed at the end of a side tunnel.
- Move back behind a solid block before trying to use the bed. Keep enough distance to avoid the blast, and make sure you have health and food to recover if you are hurt.
- Check the newly exposed area for Ancient Debris, while watching for lava opened by the explosion.
How to mine with TNT
The Minecraft Wiki mining tutorial describes digging a tunnel around Y=15, placing TNT along the floor at intervals, then lighting it. The blast clears surrounding netherrack and can expose Ancient Debris, which can remain intact because it resists explosions. A blast may also reveal lava, so approach the cleared tunnel cautiously rather than assuming it is safe to enter.
When to search a bastion instead
If you would rather explore than excavate, search bastion-remnant chests. Minecraft’s Block of the Week: Ancient Debris describes the chest route as faster but more dangerous. It is an alternative, not a dependable replacement for mining: you are exploring a structure rather than controlling where and how much netherrack you expose.

Make the choice based on your priorities
- Choose strip mining if avoiding deliberate explosions matters more than exposing netherrack quickly.
- Choose bed mining if you have beds and can use solid cover while managing health and food.
- Choose TNT if you have it and accept the risk of lava pockets in the cleared tunnel.
- Choose bastion exploration if you prefer structure exploration and accept its greater danger and less predictable yield.
The cited official guidance supports the Y=11, 12, and 15 bed-tunnel levels but does not specify a game version in the reviewed article. The Wiki tutorials are community-maintained. Because the sources do not establish a current, controlled comparison across versions, regard Y=15 and the methods above as practical guidance rather than tested guarantees.
