To lower your wanted level in GTA 5, enter LAWYERUP on PC. On PlayStation and Xbox, enter the button sequences in the table below, or dial the in-game phone code 1-999-5299-3787 (also written as 1-999-LAWYERUP). These cheats work in Story Mode only, not in GTA Online.
The code for each platform
The same wanted-level cheat uses a different input on each platform. Enter the sequence exactly as written, in one continuous run, while playing in Story Mode.

Where the cheat works
PC Gamer states that GTA 5 cheats work in Story Mode outside missions. None of the listed cheats are available in GTA Online, so a code entered in an online session will do nothing. If you are in a mission, leave it first and then enter the code.

Rockstar’s rules for cheats
Rockstar Games Customer Support sets out several behaviours that affect how you use these codes:
- Saving: Rockstar says, “Saving is allowed when cheat codes are enabled but achievements are temporarily disabled.” Using a cheat therefore switches off achievement progress while it is active.
- Repeating a code: Rockstar says, “Entering the same cheat code twice will usually, but not always, disable the cheat.” Do not rely on re-entering a code to turn it off.
- Area restrictions: Some cheats are temporarily unavailable in specific gameplay areas. If you enter a code that cannot run where you are, the game shows “Cheat Denied: Cannot activate that cheat right now.”
- Missions: Starting a mission disables any off-mission cheats that are active.
- Resetting: Reloading a save or rebooting the game resets cheats.
Troubleshooting when the code does nothing
- You are in GTA Online. The listed cheats are for Story Mode only. Switch to a single-player session.
- You are on a mission. Off-mission cheats are disabled when a mission starts. Exit the mission and enter the code again.
- You see “Cheat Denied.” The cheat cannot run in your current area. Move to a different location and try again.
- The effect has ended. Cheats reset when you reload a save or reboot. Enter the code again after loading.
- Wrong button labels. Check the table above for your platform. PlayStation and Xbox use different button names for the same sequence.
What the code does and does not do
The code lowers the wanted level. The sources reviewed describe it as a reduction, not as a full clear, so expect the police response to ease rather than vanish. If you need a guaranteed escape, lose the police by leaving the search area and waiting out the search timer in-game.
Rank #2
- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
The cheat is a single-player convenience. It does not change the wanted system in GTA Online, and the sources reviewed do not describe any online equivalent.
