Aim for around Y=15 in the Nether when mining for ancient debris. Minecraft’s official guide recommends tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15 for its bed-explosion method, while the Minecraft Wiki identifies Y=16 as the average generation peak. Those figures describe related but different things, so neither is a guaranteed best layer for every edition, version, or mining method.
Why Y=15 and Y=16 both appear in guides
Y=15 is a practical mining target: Mojang’s official ancient debris guide suggests digging tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15 for its bed method. The Minecraft Wiki, by contrast, describes Y=16 as the average generation peak. A recommended tunnel height and the peak of an average generation curve are not the same measurement. The one-level difference is small; treat Y=15 as a useful target, not a precise guarantee.

How ancient debris generates
In the Java Edition distribution described by the Minecraft Wiki, ancient debris has two generation attempts per chunk: one cluster of 0–3 attempts distributed in a triangular range from Y=8 to Y=24, plus 0–2 attempts distributed evenly from Y=8 to Y=119. The Wiki says the average generation peaks at Y=16. These details describe Java Edition; the cited sources do not establish an identical distribution for every Bedrock version or custom world.

The Wiki’s mining tutorial also calls Y=15 a common target and notes that the best layer is debated.

Choose a mining approach
Tunnel mining
For a straightforward search, mine tunnels around Y=15 and uncover blocks as you go. This follows a common target without treating the generation peak as a guarantee. The cited sources do not establish one universally optimal tunnel layout.
Bed explosions
Mojang’s guide suggests tunnels at Y=11, 12, or 15, with a bed at the end of each tunnel. Beds explode when used in the Nether, and the guide describes sheltering behind a block for protection. The method can expose buried blocks, but it carries explosion danger and uses wool and wood; it is an option, not a requirement. Bring supplies and protect yourself rather than treating the explosion as risk-free.

- Start around Y=15: it is a practical recommendation supported by Mojang’s bed-mining guidance and the Wiki’s mining tutorial.
- Do not confuse a target with a guarantee: Y=16 is the Wiki’s average generation peak, not a promise that a particular tunnel will contain debris.
