In Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 and later, use this command to give yourself a diamond sword with Knockback 255:
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[minecraft:enchantments={"minecraft:knockback":255}]
How to get a Knockback 255 sword
- Open chat or the command input for your Java Edition world.
- Enter
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[minecraft:enchantments={"minecraft:knockback":255}]and run it. - To give the sword to a different player, replace
@swith that player’s name or an appropriate selector.
To use another sword material, replace diamond_sword with that sword’s item ID.
Which Minecraft versions support this syntax?
This exact command is for Java Edition 1.21.5 and later. Java 1.20.5 replaced the older item NBT command format with structured item components in commands such as /give. Java 1.21.5 then simplified enchantment component notation. The official Java 1.20.5 release notes document the component change; the Java 1.21.5 release notes show the simplified form.

Java 1.20.5 through 1.21.4
Those versions use the earlier component form, with enchantment levels inside a levels map:
/give @s minecraft:diamond_sword[minecraft:enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:knockback":255}}]

Java before 1.20.5
The command above will not work with pre-1.20.5 item syntax. The command format changed with the component update, so use instructions written for your exact older Java version rather than pasting the current component command.
Does this command work in Bedrock Edition?
No. The command shown here uses Java Edition item components. Bedrock has a separate /give argument format; consult Microsoft’s Bedrock /give command reference for its syntax. Do not paste the Java command into Bedrock and expect it to work.

Why is Knockback set to 255?
Java Edition’s 1.20.5 release notes specify enchantment component levels as integers from 0 to 255. That makes 255 a documented component value, even though it is far above the levels normally obtained through ordinary gameplay. The official Java 1.21 notes describe the enchantment system and Knockback’s effect.

If the command fails
- Syntax or parsing error: Confirm that the game is Java Edition 1.21.5 or later. For Java 1.20.5–1.21.4, use the earlier
levelsform above. - Unknown or invalid item: Check the sword item ID and spelling, or use
minecraft:diamond_swordexactly. - Permission error: Check command access for that specific world or server. The command syntax does not grant permission to run commands.
- Playing Bedrock: Use Bedrock-specific command guidance; Java item-component syntax is not interchangeable.
