Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAgainst a level-73 raid boss in The Burning Crusade, the familiar crit-immunity benchmark is 490 Defense skill—not 490 Defense rating. Gear provides Defense rating that converts into skill, but the cited TBC references disagree on the exact conversion, so check your character sheet or a calculator for your game version. Crit immunity is also separate from the 102.4% combined-avoidance benchmark for pushing crushing blows off the attack table.
What does 490 Defense mean?
A level-70 character has 350 base Defense skill in the cited references. Reaching 490 therefore requires 140 additional skill. The target level matters: 490 is the benchmark against a level-73 enemy, while a TBC defense calculator lists 475 against an even-level target.
Defense skill affects several combat outcomes: dodge, parry, block, the chance for an attacker to miss, and the chance to be critically hit. Wowhead’s TBC stats guide says each point of Defense skill changes each of those chances by 0.04%. For a level-73 boss, the familiar 140-point increase from 350 to 490 removes the boss’s chance to critically hit you.
Is the cap 490 Defense rating or 490 Defense skill?
It is 490 Defense skill. Defense rating is the gear stat used to gain Defense skill; the two numbers are not interchangeable.

The exact rating conversion is not consistent across the references: Wowhead’s TBC guide gives a conversion of 2.4 Defense rating per skill point but also displays a total of 336 rating, while hitcap.io’s TBC calculator uses 2.3654 rating per point and displays 332 rating for its 490-skill target. Because these sources do not agree, neither rating total should be treated as a universal target. Use the character sheet or a calculator appropriate to your TBC version to confirm your skill.
Does 490 Defense make you uncrushable?
No. Reaching 490 skill addresses critical hits from a level-73 target; it does not by itself prevent crushing blows. Wowhead describes crushing blows as attacks that deal 150% damage and gives 102.4% combined dodge, parry, miss, and block as the separate avoidance condition for pushing them off the attack table. That percentage is a total avoidance threshold, not a Defense-skill value.

Does Defense stop helping after 490?
No. The cited guide and calculator indicate that Defense continues to add avoidance above the crit-immunity benchmark. Thus, 490 is a useful stopping point for one specific goal—crit immunity against a level-73 enemy—not a hard cap on the stat or a point beyond which Defense has no value.
How should you use the number when gearing?
- For crit immunity against a level-73 boss: use 490 Defense skill as the benchmark.
- For a lower-level target: do not assume the same threshold applies; the calculator lists 475 skill against an even-level target.
- For crushing-blow avoidance: assess the separate combined-avoidance condition rather than treating 490 skill as sufficient.
- When reading gear stats: distinguish Defense rating from the resulting Defense skill, and verify the conversion for your game version.
Resilience can also reduce the chance of being critically hit, according to the Wowhead guide, but it does not provide the same avoidance contribution as Defense. It is therefore not interchangeable with Defense for every tanking goal.

Why is 490 the benchmark?
A concise arithmetic explanation appeared in a World of Warcraft Forums post by Smeet on August 22, 2021: “Level 73 bosses have a 5.6% chance to crit you, so you need 5.6/.04 = 140 defense skill above the 350 cap outside of gear to remove their chance to crit you entirely. 350 + 140 = 490 defense.” This is a forum user’s explanation, not an official Blizzard statement; the TBC guide and calculator also identify 490 skill as the threshold against a +3-level target.
