For Java 1.20.5 and later, this example trades one emerald for one diamond:
/summon villager ~ ~ ~ {Offers:{Recipes:[{buy:{id:"minecraft:emerald",count:1},sell:{id:"minecraft:diamond",count:1},maxUses:999999}]}}
How the custom-trade command works
The command creates a villager at your location. Its Offers compound contains a Recipes list, and each recipe defines what the player pays and what the villager gives. In the example, buy is one emerald, sell is one diamond, and maxUses sets the offer’s use limit. The large limit is an example value, not a special unlimited setting. See the community syntax examples in Minecraft Wiki’s useful commands tutorial and Minecraft Commands Wiki.
How to change the offer
- To change the payment, replace
minecraft:emeraldinbuy.idwith another item ID and setbuy.countto the number required. - To change the reward, replace
minecraft:diamondinsell.idand adjustsell.count. - To add another offer, add another recipe object inside the
Recipeslist. - To require a second payment item, add a
buyBitem definition to the recipe. - To change how many times an offer can be used before it locks, adjust
maxUses.
Check your Java version’s item syntax
The sample uses the component-era item format shown in Java 1.20.5-and-later examples: item IDs are paired with lowercase count. Older command examples use uppercase Count and may put custom item data in a legacy tag field. Use syntax that matches the version you are playing; a long command copied from an older tutorial may not work unchanged in a newer release. The community reference at Minecraft Commands Wiki covers both formats.
Java and Bedrock use different approaches
Do not treat the Java Offers.Recipes summon command as a universal Minecraft command. Microsoft’s Bedrock trade-table documentation describes configuring trades through entity and behavior-pack files, including trade tables and trade groups. A Java summon payload is not a substitute for that Bedrock setup.

What changed in Java 26.1?
Mojang’s Java Edition 26.1 release notes describe data-driven villager and wandering-trader trades for data-pack developers, with fields including wants, additional_wants, gives, and max_uses, organized into trade sets. The notes do not specifically confirm that the exact Offers.Recipes summon payload above works in 26.1, so treat it as a documented Java 1.20.5+ pattern rather than a verified 26.1 command.
