HAC-001 is the original Nintendo Switch model number, and HAC-001(-01) is the revised standard Nintendo Switch. The clearest difference Nintendo documents is estimated battery duration: about 2.5 to 6.5 hours for HAC-001 and about 4.5 to 9 hours for HAC-001(-01). Those figures are estimates, not guaranteed runtimes, and they change with the software and functions you use.
How the two model numbers compare
Nintendo uses the model number printed on the console to identify the hardware, and it links each model to a serial-number prefix. The table below lists only what Nintendo’s support guidance states.

The battery range is the only buyer-facing difference that Nintendo’s official battery guidance establishes. Nintendo’s support material does not establish a difference in gameplay speed, screen quality, or any other practical feature, so those should not be assumed.
How to tell which model you have
Use the physical console rather than a listing description. Nintendo’s support guidance on serial numbers places the model number on the text on the back of the system.

- Power the console off and turn it over so the back is facing you.
- Read the model number printed in the rear text. It will read either HAC-001 or HAC-001(-01).
- Find the serial number, which Nintendo’s serial-number page explains how to locate, and check its first three characters. XAW matches HAC-001; XKW matches HAC-001(-01).
- If the model number and serial prefix do not match Nintendo’s pairings, do not rely on the listing. Ask the seller for a clear photo of the rear text and serial number before buying.
Some informal listings describe the revised unit as “V2.” That shorthand is common but not Nintendo’s naming. Anchor your identification in the model number and serial prefix instead.
What the battery figures mean
Nintendo presents the ranges as estimated battery duration, not as results of a standardized test. The lower and upper ends reflect the software and functions being used, so the same console can run longer or shorter than the stated range. For HAC-001, Nintendo’s estimate is roughly 2.5 to 6.5 hours; for HAC-001(-01), roughly 4.5 to 9 hours.

Battery aging on used consoles
Battery capacity declines over time in both revisions. Nintendo says that after about 800 charge cycles, duration may be about 80% of what a new console delivers, and it describes this decline as normal. Its support article puts it this way: “As with most lithium-ion batteries, the console battery life will gradually decrease over time.”

What the sources do not establish
The battery ranges above come from Nintendo’s own support guidance, observed in 2026. No independent, side-by-side battery test of the two revisions is cited here, so the ranges should be read as manufacturer estimates.
The iFixit teardown of the refreshed Nintendo Switch, published in 2019, discusses the hardware revision and the battery-life context around it. Any statement about specific internal components comes from that teardown, not from Nintendo’s specifications, and should be attributed accordingly.

Buying or repairing a revised or older unit
- Request a clear image of the rear model marking and the serial number before purchase.
- Confirm the serial prefix matches the model number on the same photo.
- Ask about battery condition directly. A battery that has aged will not deliver the published range.
- If a unit runs much shorter than Nintendo’s range, the battery is the most likely cause to investigate first.
- If you buy a replacement battery, verify that it is compatible with your exact model number and suitable for repair before ordering. Nintendo’s degradation guidance explains why batteries lose capacity, but it does not endorse any third-party battery.
