For Alliance, Human is the strongest all-round pick, especially for sword-focused PvE and PvP against stealth classes. For Horde PvE, choose Troll for a higher but conditional damage ceiling or Orc for more consistent damage; for Horde PvP, Undead is the broadest recommendation.
These rankings depend on which version you mean. A TBC Classic DPS guide and a separate Burning Crusade Anniversary guide differ on Horde PvE, so their recommendations should not be treated as one universal ranking.

PvE: Human
Human is the leading Alliance PvE choice in both cited guides. The TBC Classic DPS guide describes Human weapon specializations as the only Alliance racial option that reliably increases rogue damage. The Anniversary guide also recommends Human for PvE, noting that Sword Specialization reduces the chance of attacks being dodged or parried by 1.25% when using a sword. That figure is the Anniversary guide’s claim, not a universal result for every weapon setup.
#1 Best Overall
Because the benefit is tied to swords, it matters most when your weapon choice makes use of the specialization. If you are not using swords, do not assume the stated advantage applies in the same way.
PvP: Human
Human Perception can help reveal opposing Rogues and Druids, making it useful in stealth matchups. The Anniversary guide calls Human the best Alliance arena choice, pairing that PvP utility with the race’s PvE weapon specialization.

Other Alliance options
- Dwarf: Stoneform can help in encounters involving bleeds or poisons and has PvP utility.
- Gnome: Escape Artist can clear roots or snares in some PvE encounters.
- Night Elf: Shadowmeld reduces stealth detection, but the cited TBC Classic DPS guide says its effect is substantially weaker than Human Perception.
Best Horde rogue race for PvE
Troll: conditional damage ceiling
The Burning Crusade Anniversary guide says Troll can lead when Berserking reliably provides more than 20% attack speed. At 20%, it describes Troll as on par with Orc; above that threshold, it says Troll can be stronger. This is the guide’s conditional comparison, not an independently reproduced simulation result. Reaching the stronger outcome depends on getting a substantial Berserking bonus, so it is not the most consistent pick.

The Anniversary guide presents Orc as more consistent and less dependent on setup than Troll. By contrast, the TBC Classic DPS guide favors Orc’s reliable Blood Fury and generally considers Troll outmatched except when low health strengthens Berserking. The guides therefore disagree in emphasis: one highlights Troll’s potential when its haste bonus is high, while the other prioritizes Orc’s dependable damage contribution.

- Discover a Lost Continent - Explore the ancient kingdoms of Pandaria and mount your defense against a newly awakened evil stirring in the continent's dark corners.
If you want a straightforward recommendation without relying on a favorable Berserking window, choose Orc. If you are playing the Anniversary version and can reliably reach the guide’s stated Berserking threshold, Troll is a reasonable choice for the higher potential ceiling.
Blood Elf: utility with competitive theoretical damage
The Anniversary guide says Blood Elf is not far behind in theoretical damage. Its Arcane Torrent provides an energy benefit and an eight-yard area silence. The TBC Classic DPS guide calls it the weakest of the three Horde damage racials, while noting that its utility can still matter.

Best rogue race for PvP
Horde: Undead
For broad Horde PvP utility, the Anniversary guide favors Undead because Will of the Forsaken removes important crowd-control effects. The TBC Classic DPS guide likewise describes the racial as mainly useful in PvP, with occasional PvE value in encounters involving fear, charm, or sleep.
Orc: a strong alternative
Orc Hardiness is also a strong PvP racial, particularly if you value its stun resistance. The cited Anniversary guide still places Undead first overall for Horde arena, but the better personal choice can depend on which matchups and effects you most want to counter.
Best Value
Alliance: Human
Human Perception’s stealth detection makes it the clearest Alliance PvP recommendation in the cited material, especially against Rogues and Druids. It does not make Human a universal winner in every matchup, but it provides a direct answer to stealth-based opponents.
Which TBC version are these recommendations for?
“TBC” can mean original The Burning Crusade, Burning Crusade Classic, or Burning Crusade Anniversary. The TBC Classic DPS guide identifies itself as a 2.5.1 guide, shows Patch 2.5.6, and lists an update date of February 10, 2026. The separate Wowhead racial guide covers Burning Crusade Anniversary. Since the sources frame Horde PvE differently, check that a recommendation matches the version and conditions you play rather than combining their rankings.
Does choosing a non-optimal racial matter?
Racials can improve damage or provide useful matchup tools, but they are not a prerequisite for playing a rogue well. Simonize, author of the Wowhead TBC Rogue DPS guide, says that choosing a non-optimal racial “will not prevent you from performing well in either PvE or PvP content.” For casual play or leveling, personal preference and utility are reasonable reasons to choose a different race.
