Make sure you mean the Golden Claw door
Bleak Falls Barrow has two separate symbol puzzles, and players often mix them up. The first is a set of three rotating pillars near the entrance. Secondary guides commonly report its order as Snake, Snake, Whale, though some call the third symbol a fish or dolphin. That sequence does not open the later door.

The answer above applies only to the door that is opened with the Golden Claw. The two puzzles are different and use different symbol sequences, so check which one you are facing before you rotate anything.

Solve the Golden Claw door
- Open your inventory and inspect the Golden Claw. Its animal symbols are the clue, and they show the order you need.
- Rotate the door rings to match the claw, reading from the outer ring toward the center: Bear, Moth, Owl.
- Use the Golden Claw on the central lock to open the door.
If the rings do not respond, the most likely cause is a ring set to the wrong symbol or a misread order. Check that you have read the sequence from the outside in, not from the center out.

The in-game hint
The Arvel’s Journal entry gives the hint in a single line: “the solution is in the palm of your hands.” That refers to the claw itself, which carries the symbol order. GameBanshee reproduces this line and identifies the claw symbols as bear, moth, and owl. The line is an in-game document, not a quotation from a real-world speaker.
How reliable this answer is
The Bear, Moth, Owl order is consistent across the several walkthroughs that cover this door. These are fan and community guides, not an official Bethesda reference, so if a future patch or edition changed the puzzle, these guides may not reflect it. Published sources in this check did not establish any difference between platforms for this puzzle, so the order above should apply to the Skyrim Special Edition version on every platform.

No statistics are involved in this puzzle. The solution is a fixed symbol order that players can confirm directly by inspecting the Golden Claw.
