It does not require equipment or have a universal set of rules or scoring.
What does “ding dong ditch” mean?
The phrase describes the central action: ring or knock, then leave before the resident comes to the door. Cambridge English Dictionary labels “ding dong ditch” US informal and records the spellings “ding-dong-ditch” and “ding-dong ditch.” It gives “knock down Ginger” as the UK equivalent.
Is it a game with rules?
It is commonly called a game, but it is better understood as a prank than as a structured game. The dictionary definition and the documented incidents describe the basic action; they do not establish formal rules, equipment, or a scoring system.
Why can it be risky?
An unexpected knock can frighten residents, particularly at night, and a prank can escalate into a serious incident. These examples show what has happened in particular cases; they do not indicate how often such outcomes occur.
