That cap is not permanent. Each time the same character completes the campaign and moves into New Game Plus (NG+), its cap rises by five levels, and the wiki’s stated rules set no overall ceiling on that progression.
The starting cap and how it grows
The Heroes of Hammerwatch Wiki’s leveling page gives the starting cap as 20 and the rule for raising it as a single formula: level cap = 20 + (character NG+ × 5). The “character NG+” value is the number of New Game Plus progressions that specific character has completed, not the difficulty or cycle of the save file or the party. Cap by NG+ progression
Applying the formula gives the following values. These are calculated from the published rule; the wiki does not list them as separately reported results.
| Character NG+ completions | Level cap (20 + NG+ × 5) |
|---|---|
| 0 (first run) | 20 |
| 1 (NG+1) | 25 |
| 2 (NG+2) | 30 |
| 3 (NG+3) | 35 |
Why the cap is tied to each character
The increase belongs to the individual character. A character’s own campaign completions determine its cap, so a veteran character with several NG+ clears can sit well above 20 while a new character in the same save remains at 20. The New Game Plus page also notes a multiplayer nuance: a character who joins a higher NG+ game may still be limited to its own lower cap if it has not completed the earlier progression. No overall maximum in the stated rules
The New Game Plus page describes no NG-level cap. Because the cap grows by five with every credited completion, the wiki’s rules imply no fixed top level for a character. The practical limit is how many NG+ cycles a player chooses to complete.

- Open the character menu from the game’s main interface.
- Select the character whose cap you want to check.
- Hover over the experience tracker. It shows the character’s current level cap.
Use this in-game readout rather than the formula when you need the exact figure, because it reflects the cap the game is actually applying to that character.

Scope and version limits
- Game: This applies to the original Heroes of Hammerwatch. The sequel, Heroes of Hammerwatch 2, has different progression rules and is not covered here.
- Version: The wiki pages cited do not show a publication date, and the sources do not confirm which game patch they reflect. If a later patch has changed leveling, the experience tracker is the reliable check.
- Source type: These rules come from community-maintained wiki pages, not a developer statement. The formula is the wiki’s own summary of how the cap works.
