The game has no route, cave, or postgame location where a Mew appears. The Old Sea Map and Faraway Island method that many players remember belongs to Pokémon Emerald. The only way a Mew has ever reached a FireRed save is through an external event distribution, and those events are over.
Why searching FireRed’s map will not turn up Mew
FireRed’s wild encounter tables do not include Mew. Players who search Kanto’s routes, caves, or towns, or who try the Vermilion City area, will not trigger a Mew encounter. The question also comes up in several forms. Common phrasings include “Is there any glitch for Mew in FireRed?” and the rumor “Mew under the truck.” Both are questions or myths, not evidence of a hidden encounter. The truck rumor is associated with the first-generation games (Red, Blue, and Yellow), not with FireRed.

The Old Sea Map belongs to Emerald
In Pokémon Emerald, the event Key Item Old Sea Map opens the route to Faraway Island, where Mew is encountered. FireRed and LeafGreen do not use that method. The two games share Kanto and sit in the same generation, and they can exchange Pokémon with other Generation III games, which is why the Emerald route gets attached to them so often. But the Old Sea Map is not a FireRed item, and a FireRed save does not open Faraway Island.
How a Mew can exist on a FireRed save
A Mew can be present on a FireRed save without being catchable in normal play, because it was delivered to the cartridge rather than placed in the world. Specialist event databases record a 2006 US distribution, commonly called “Mystery Mew,” associated with FireRed cartridges. Nintendo event distributions of this kind placed a Pokémon onto a save directly. They did not add a location to the map, and they did not give the player a way to find another Mew afterward.

#1 Best Overall
- Join up to 39 other wireless Trainers in the Union Room for a free-for-all, or connect with just two or three in the Direct Corner
- Prove yourself in the region's Pokémon League while single-handedly bringing down Team Rocket - then open up all-new storylines with unexpected twists
- Bring the Pokemon you capture in Fire Red to the worlds of Leaf Green, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, or Pokemon Colosseum for more challenge
Event specifics come from fan-maintained specialist databases rather than an archived official notice, so treat the exact dates and delivery terms as secondary information. What is well supported is the distinction itself: a distributed Pokémon is not the same as one caught during gameplay.
Mewtwo is a different Pokémon
Readers searching for legendary Pokémon in FireRed often mix up Mew and Mewtwo. Mewtwo has a normal in-game encounter in FireRed, so it can be caught by playing the game. That encounter does not tell you anything about Mew, and the two should not be combined in walkthrough directions.
What the current Switch editions change
Nintendo’s FAQ states that the Switch editions of FireRed and LeafGreen have contents broadly the same as the original Game Boy Advance release, and that the Switch editions are digital software with no physical release. The Pokémon Company has announced Pokémon HOME connectivity for the Switch versions beginning October 2026. That announcement concerns transfers and a Pokédex reward. It does not add a Mew encounter or an in-game catch location to FireRed. Official announcements can change, so check Nintendo’s and The Pokémon Company’s news pages before relying on any future availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you already have a Mew on your FireRed save
If a Mew is on your save, it arrived through a distribution rather than through the game world. Open its summary screen and check the original trainer name and ID number, which are shown there. A distributed Pokémon keeps the details of the event it came from, so this is the most reliable way to tell a distributed Mew from anything else on the save.
Buying a Game Boy Advance FireRed cartridge will not add Mew to your game. A cartridge gives you the original release, and nothing more.
Summary of the options
| Method | Works in FireRed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Searching routes, caves, or towns | No | No standard wild Mew encounter exists in FireRed. |
| Old Sea Map and Faraway Island | No | An Emerald method. FireRed does not use it. |
| Historical event distribution | Only in the past | Specialist databases record a 2006 US “Mystery Mew” tied to FireRed cartridges. The event is over and cannot be redeemed now. |
| Mewtwo encounter | Yes, but it is a different Pokémon | A normal in-game encounter that does not answer where Mew is. |
Whether a Mew appears on a FireRed save depends only on whether one was distributed to that cartridge in the past. Gameplay alone will not produce one.
