But that is a historical estimate of people who had ever played, not a count of current players or sessions. A 2025 report of a U.S. adult survey also puts Monopoly first for games played in the prior year—but it does not establish a worldwide ranking.
Why “most played” has no single clear answer
The phrase can mean several different things: the most people who have ever tried a game, the most people who played it recently, the largest regular audience, the most sessions, or the most copies sold. Those measures answer different questions. A game can have enormous historical reach without leading in current play, and sales do not tell us how often each copy reaches the table.

The available figures use different measures, dates, and populations. None provides a current, representative global comparison of board-game play frequency.
What the figures say about Monopoly
Historical worldwide reach
Guinness World Records lists Monopoly as the “Most popular board game” and reports that 500 million people worldwide had played it as of 1999. This is a historical estimate of people who had played the game—not a count of active players, recent participation, or sessions.

The Library of Congress says that by 2010, more than 250 million Monopoly sets had been sold since the game’s invention and over half a billion people had played it. It describes Monopoly as “possibly the most popular board game in the world.” These are historical figures, not a current frequency ranking.
Recent participation in the United States
A January 18, 2025 report by Troy Press says it surveyed over 1,000 U.S. adults about tabletop games they had played in the prior year, “in real life, not on an electronic device.” The reported leaders were Monopoly at 37%, checkers at 25%, and chess at 24%. This offers a recent U.S. snapshot of past-year participation; it is not a global survey or a measure of how many times people played.

How CATAN’s numbers compare
CATAN GmbH reports that over 45 million CATAN games had been sold worldwide from 1995 through Q1 2025. The company also estimates that approximately 20 million people regularly spend time in the CATAN gaming universe. The first figure is cumulative sales; the second covers the company’s wider gaming universe. Neither directly measures CATAN play frequency against other board games, so these numbers cannot be compared like-for-like with Monopoly’s historical estimate of people who had ever played.

- Historical popularity: Monopoly has a widely cited worldwide reach estimate of 500 million people who had played it as of 1999.
- Recent U.S. participation: In Troy Press’s reported survey, Monopoly led checkers and chess for play during the prior year among surveyed U.S. adults.
- Current global play frequency: The figures above do not establish which board game currently has the most active players or the most sessions worldwide.
So if “most played” means a game with exceptionally broad historical reach, Monopoly is a defensible answer. If it means the board game currently played most often around the world, the available figures do not identify a verified winner.
