The oldest documented interactive computer game set in space is Spacewar!, developed for the PDP-1. The Computer History Museum dates its conception and first version to 1961, with substantial improvements in spring 1962; The Strong National Museum of Play describes it as created by 1962.
Why Spacewar! is the best-supported answer
The Computer History Museum credits Steve Russell, Martin Graetz and Wayne Wiitanen with conceiving Spacewar! in 1961, and says Russell wrote its first version that year. Peter Samson, Dan Edwards and Graetz made significant improvements in spring 1962. The Strong’s account gives the broader date of 1962. Those dates describe different development milestones, rather than a contradiction: the game began in 1961 and was refined in 1962. Neither account gives an exact day for the first playable version.

This answer is specifically about an interactive computer game set in space. It does not establish that Spacewar! was the first video game of any kind. The meaning of “oldest” can also shift depending on whether the question is about a concept, a playable first version, a refined game or an arcade release.

Spacewar! ran on the Digital PDP-1 and was designed for two players. Each piloted a spaceship and tried to destroy the other with torpedoes. A star field framed the action, while the gravity of a central sun affected the ships’ movement and could pull them into danger.

The Computer History Museum notes the technical demands behind the play: its account says the PDP-1 performed over 100,000 calculations per second to handle ship motion, gravity, control inputs and the relative positions of the stars and sun. It also says the computer sent over 20,000 points per second to the Type 30 display while the game ran. The museum’s page does not state a publication year for these figures.
How the 1971 arcade milestones differ
If “oldest space game” means an arcade game, the answer depends on which milestone you mean. Galaxy Game was a coin-operated version of Spacewar!, not the original game. The International Arcade Museum dates its Stanford installation to September 1971 and calls it the earliest known coin-operated computer or video game. The Strong also identifies Computer Space as a commercial adaptation of Spacewar!, part of the later arcade story rather than the origin of the space-themed computer game.
