1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe point of digital rights management (DRM) is to let a rights holder or distributor control how digital content is accessed or used after it is delivered. A game product key, a sign-in requirement, or a limit on the devices that can play a title are familiar examples. DRM is a technical control layer—not copyright itself—and its effects depend on how a particular system is designed.
What DRM does
DRM applies access conditions to digital works such as games, video, ebooks, and journals. A system may authenticate an account or device, encrypt content, and require compatible software to obtain or use a license or decryption key. The European Union Intellectual Property Office describes authentication and encryption as core processes, with device limits for streaming and product keys for games among the common examples (EUIPO’s DRM guide).
There is no single DRM technology or universal bundle of restrictions. One game may ask for a product key; another system may tie access to an account, supported device, application, or online service. The specific rules come from the implementation, not from the word “DRM” alone.
How DRM works in games and other media
A typical protected-content flow checks whether a user, account, or device is authorized. If it is, a compatible player or DRM component can obtain or use the license or key needed to decrypt or play the content. The details differ by service and product.

Game product keys and account checks
A product key is a recognizable way to associate a game copy with an authorization. Depending on the system, a game may also rely on an account, launcher, device authorization, or periodic connection to a service. Those requirements are not identical across games, so a key does not by itself tell you whether a title will work offline or on another device.
Browser video and EME
For browser video, the W3C’s Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) define an interface through which a web page communicates with underlying DRM-agent software. EME is an API, not DRM itself: it does not create or require DRM, but allows a page to use a platform’s DRM capability (W3C Encrypted Media Extensions).

Rights descriptions are not the same as enforcement
A rights-expression model can describe permissions, while a DRM implementation can enforce some conditions in software or devices. The W3C’s older Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) document describes a broader framework for expressing and managing rights over digital or physical works; it should not be confused with a specific technical mechanism that locks or decrypts a file (W3C ODRL).
Why distributors use DRM—and the tradeoffs for players
Distributors use DRM to restrict unauthorized access or use and to apply conditions to digital distribution. EUIPO also identifies authentication, tracking, and anti-tampering as potential uses. These are intended control mechanisms, not evidence that DRM stops all copying or piracy.

- 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝘆, 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: Features a reliable mechanism, anti-skip technology, and essential playback controls (fast-forward, zoom, A-B repeat) for a seamless viewing experience.
For players, the same controls can make legitimate access depend on more than owning or downloading a file. Depending on the system, you may need a supported device or app, an account, a network connection, an active service, or a valid license. The W3C has documented concerns that DRM can constrain independent playback systems and feature development; those are design and policy concerns, not proof that every DRM system blocks every accessibility feature (W3C EME recommendation announcement; W3C TAG: Unsanctioned Web; W3C Ethical Web Principles).
What to check before relying on a game or service
- Device and software support: Check which platforms, operating systems, launchers, and browsers are supported.
- Offline play: Find out whether first-time activation or later play requires a network connection.
- Portability: Check whether access carries over to another device, account, or service.
- Accessibility: Verify support for captions, audio description, and other features you need on the specific platform.
- Service and license continuity: Understand what happens if a license expires, an account is unavailable, or the service is discontinued.
These checks help assess an individual implementation; they do not amount to a universal ranking of DRM systems.

What U.S. law says about bypassing DRM
In the United States, Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act addresses circumvention of certain technological measures used to control access to copyrighted works, subject to specific exemptions. The U.S. Copyright Office lists exemptions for specified activities, including some device-interoperability, repair, security-research, and preservation uses (U.S. Copyright Office: Section 1201). Exemptions are limited and periodically revisited; their existence does not mean every act of circumvention is allowed or settle other legal questions.
The 2024 U.S. Code text says: “Nothing in this section shall affect rights, remedies, limitations, or defenses to copyright infringement, including fair use, under this title” (17 U.S.C. § 1201(c)(1), 2024). This preserves the relationship to copyright defenses; it does not establish that bypassing DRM is automatically lawful. This legal explanation is specific to the United States.
