Upgrading gear in Hogwarts Legacy at the Enchanted Loom adds the stat your item is missing: offense for a defensive item, or defense for an offensive one. You can also use the Loom to add or replace a trait, which gives a separate combat effect. The point is to make a useful piece of gear stronger and better suited to how you fight—not simply to increase its displayed number.
What upgrading gear actually does
Gear has an offense or defense stat. An upgrade adds the opposite stat, so a defensive piece can gain offense and an offensive piece can gain defense. Traits are a separate choice. They add a combat effect, such as improving damage from a particular spell or defense against a particular enemy. At the Loom, you can upgrade an item’s stats, add a trait if it has an available slot, or replace the trait already in that slot. A trait does not replace or increase the item’s base offense or defense stat. Game8 describes these options in its gear-upgrade guide.
When the Enchanted Loom becomes available
The Enchanted Loom is in the Room of Requirement. It unlocks as part of the main quest “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom.” Until then, you cannot use it to upgrade gear or apply traits. Pro Game Guides’ Loom guide covers the quest unlock.

Why rarity matters
Rarity affects upgrade eligibility and the maximum trait tier an item can take. The following tier details come from community-maintained references, so check the item in your current game rather than assuming every piece follows the table:

The tier breakdown is listed in the community references for gear and traits. A trait already occupying a slot can be replaced, but the guides do not describe stacking multiple different traits in one slot.

What you spend, and where to get materials
Both upgrades and traits require beast materials. You can obtain materials by caring for captured beasts; Gamer Guides also reports that Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade sells materials. The exact requirement depends on the upgrade or trait you choose, so read the cost shown at the Loom before confirming rather than relying on a fixed recipe.

Use the Loom when its added stat or a compatible trait would make an item you plan to use more effective. Before spending materials, compare the item with your alternatives:

- How long you expect to keep the item: Because upgrades use beast materials, investing in gear you expect to replace soon may be less useful. This is a practical way to weigh the documented cost, not a universal game rule.
There is no single best item or fixed upgrade schedule established by the cited guides. The benefit depends on the item’s stats, rarity, available trait, and how well that trait matches your approach to combat.
