Pikachu Illustrator is the best-supported answer among widely recognized, officially distributed Pokémon cards. Heritage Auctions reports that 39 were made and released through three CoroCoro Comics illustration events in Japan in 1998. That figure describes the original release—not a confirmed count of surviving cards—and available sources do not prove it is rarer than every trophy card, prototype, or unusual production piece.
Why Pikachu Illustrator is the leading answer
Pikachu Illustrator is famous in part because it was tied to illustration contests rather than a standard booster-pack release. Heritage Auctions says the card was awarded in connection with three CoroCoro Comics illustration events in 1998 and reports that 39 copies were made and released. Heritage Auctions’ account of the card
That documented, limited distribution makes Pikachu Illustrator one of the strongest candidates when “rarest” means a famous card officially released to the public in very small numbers. It does not establish how many copies survive today: production or release totals and present-day surviving-copy counts are different measures.
What “rarest” can mean
There is no single rarity measure that settles every comparison. A card can be scarce because few were originally distributed, because few are known to survive, or because only a tiny number are available in a particular condition or grade.

- Distribution: how and to whom the card was originally awarded or released.
- Reported quantity: the number said to have been made or released, which should not be confused with surviving copies.
- Evidence: documented release information is more useful than an unsupported collector estimate.
- Condition and grade: a card may be scarce overall, while copies in a top grade are rarer still.
- Sale price: a high auction result reflects demand and the specific example sold; it is not itself a rarity census.
How the auction record fits in
Guinness World Records lists a PSA Gem Mint 10 Pikachu Illustrator sold through Goldin Auctions for $16,492,000 on February 16, 2026, as the most expensive Pokémon trading card sold at auction. This is a dated price record for a specific graded copy, not proof that Pikachu Illustrator is definitively the rarest card across every category. Guinness World Records’ auction record listing
The grade matters to the context: Guinness identifies the record card as PSA Gem Mint 10. The Associated Press reported at the time that it was believed to be the only copy with a quality rating of 10; that is a contemporaneous reported belief, not a permanent or comprehensive population count. - 1x Pokemon Card authenticated and graded by PSA card.
For historical context, Heritage Auctions reported a $840,000 result for a PSA 9 Pikachu Illustrator in 2022. That earlier sale is superseded by the 2026 record and should not be mistaken for the card’s current auction benchmark. Heritage Auctions’ 2022 sale report

The available documentation does not compare every trophy card, prototype, and unusual production item in a complete, consistent census. Heritage Auctions also identifies other rare promotional cards, including a Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy Card, but that mention alone does not establish a definitive ranking against Pikachu Illustrator.

So the careful answer is that Pikachu Illustrator is among the rarest Pokémon cards and the best-documented famous candidate among official releases. A claim that it is unconditionally the rarest card of any kind—or that exactly 39 copies still exist—goes beyond the evidence cited here.
