It can mean a birthday date that shifts, a Sim who gets a birthday moodlet but does not age after blowing out candles, or a Sim who ages unexpectedly after age settings change. Those symptoms have different possible explanations, so identify which one you are seeing before troubleshooting.
What players mean by “the birthday glitch”
Players use the phrase for several different behaviors in The Sims 4. A birthday moving on the calendar is not the same issue as a failed cake interaction, and neither symptom alone establishes its cause.
- Birthday or remaining days shift: the calendar date or time left in a life stage changes. A player discussion suggests pregnancy may pause aging, but that is a possible explanation for this symptom, not a diagnosis for every case. Read the EA Forums discussion.
- No age-up after candles: a Sim blows out birthday candles and may receive the birthday moodlet, but does not age. A PS5 player reported this behavior; the discussion does not establish its cause or confirm that the suggested workaround worked. See the player report.
- Unexpected age-up after settings changes: Sims may age incorrectly when the player adjusts game age options. EA’s October 22, 2024 update notes document a fix for that specific behavior. Check the update notes.
The available reports do not show how common these symptoms are or establish their current status across every game version and platform.
If a birthday date or life-stage countdown keeps moving
Check whether the Sim is pregnant
Pregnancy was suggested in an EA Forums reply as a reason aging may pause. Check whether it fits the Sim and the timing of the shift; the discussion does not show that pregnancy explains other birthday behaviors.

Test without aging-related mods
If you use mods that alter aging, life stages, or their lengths, remove them for a controlled test. The forum helper specifically advises not saving during this test session. If the symptom disappears without the mod, an outdated or conflicting mod may be involved; that result is a clue, not proof of which file is responsible. EA also advises removing external mods and custom content as a first troubleshooting step when issues occur, because they may conflict with updates. EA’s February 18, 2025 guidance.
If blowing out candles does not age up the Sim
First distinguish a failed age-up from a birthday-date shift: the PS5 discussion describes a Sim receiving the birthday moodlet without aging after the candle interaction. It does not confirm a cause or a successful fix.

A forum helper suggested changing the Sim’s age in Create a Sim using a cheat. Treat that as an anecdotal community workaround, not an official or guaranteed solution; the helper warned it may affect achievements. The report does not verify whether the workaround resolved the player’s issue. Read the full discussion before considering it.
If Sims age unexpectedly after changing age options
Check whether the behavior matches the narrow issue addressed in EA’s October 22, 2024 patch notes: Sims incorrectly aging up when players adjust game age options. The notes say EA fixed that behavior. They do not establish a fix for a Sim who fails to age after candles or for a birthday date that shifts. Review the official update notes.

A practical order for troubleshooting
- Name the symptom: note whether the birthday date shifts, candles fail to trigger an age-up, or the Sim ages unexpectedly after age options change.
- For a shifting date: check whether the Sim is pregnant, then consider whether an aging, life-stage, or stage-length mod could be involved.
- If mods or custom content are installed: remove them for a controlled test. Do not save the session if following the forum helper’s test for an age-related mod. EA’s published guidance treats removing external mods and custom content as an initial troubleshooting step.
- Match the game update to the symptom: consult EA’s update history for the relevant platform and version. The October 22, 2024 note covers incorrect aging while adjusting age options, not every birthday report.
- Keep platform-specific workarounds in perspective: the Create-a-Sim suggestion is a community report involving PS5, carries an achievement caveat, and was not confirmed as successful.
EA has also cautioned that an issue being investigated is not guaranteed to receive an immediate fix. A patch note for one behavior should not be treated as confirmation that unrelated birthday symptoms are resolved. See EA’s February 2025 Laundry List.
