In Battlefield 2042, the SOFLAM is a deployable target-designation gadget: it marks enemy vehicles so teammates can engage them with compatible lock-on weapons. It does not deal the attack damage itself. EA/DICE documented one example in which the CG Recoilless M5 could lock onto enemy air vehicles designated by a SOFLAM.
What does the SOFLAM do?
The SOFLAM Designator lets a player designate enemy vehicles. That designation can support teammate lock-on attacks, making the gadget a team-enabling tool rather than a direct-damage weapon. In its Update #3 notes, EA/DICE specifically documented the CG Recoilless M5 locking onto enemy air vehicles via SOFLAM designation. That example establishes an interaction, not a guarantee that every launcher can lock onto every designated target in every situation.
How does the “Designated” indicator work?
DICE Team’s Update #3.2.0 notes state: “The "Designated" UI is now only visible if you have a gadget that can lock on or currently hold the SOFLAM in your hands.” This is a rule documented for that update; it should not be treated as a universal promise about every later build, platform, or settings configuration.
What should you know about its behavior?
SOFLAM deployment and interface behavior have received fixes over the game’s update history. Update #3 addressed designation UI elements persisting after switching gadgets while zoomed, as well as misaligned tooltip text. Update #5.0.0 documented fixes for the designation sound effect and a camera issue after deploying the gadget. These are historical patch-note details, not proof that the same issues affect the current build.
