What Is the Structure of a Game?

A game’s structure links its goals and rules to player actions, challenges, feedback and outcomes. Here’s how to describe the parts and see how they shape play.

A game’s structure is how its goals, rules, player actions, challenges, interactions, feedback and outcomes fit together during play. To describe one clearly, explain what players are trying to do, what they can do under the rules, how a typical cycle of play unfolds, and how actions change the game and lead to an outcome. There is no single required checklist: the useful elements depend on the game and on what you want to explain.

What makes up a game’s structure?

A practical description connects the parts of play rather than simply naming mechanics. Start with the goal, then show how rules shape the actions available to players, how challenges make those actions meaningful, and how the game responds. Include the player arrangement and ending conditions when they affect the experience.

  • Goal and outcome: What are players trying to accomplish? What counts as winning, losing, or completing the game?
  • Actions and rules: What can players do, when can they do it, and how are actions resolved or constrained?
  • Challenge and decisions: What obstacles, conflicts, or choices give the actions significance?
  • Turn or core loop: What sequence of actions and responses typically repeats as play progresses?
  • Players and interaction: Is the game solo, cooperative, competitive, or organized in another way?
  • Feedback and changing state: How does the game show the consequences of actions, and what changes as a result?

Story, levels, progression, usability, or an in-game economy may also be central. Include them when they shape how players understand the goal or move through play, not because every game must contain them. Minnesota’s game-design learning targets, for example, cover objectives, outcomes, rules or interactive flow, conflict, story, usability and economies as educational design topics—not as a mandatory checklist for all games. Minnesota Department of Education game-design standards

How do a game’s parts work together?

Think of structure as the relationship between a player’s choices and the game’s response. A rule defines what an action can do; a decision gives the player a reason to choose it; feedback communicates what happened; and the resulting game state sets up the next decision. If you describe only a list of mechanics, that chain—and the way play develops over time—can be hard to see.

W. Westera and coauthors distinguish a game’s static configuration from its dynamics: the changes to game components over time. Their 2008 article develops a framework for scenario-based serious games, so the distinction is useful for explaining how a game works without treating that framework as a complete definition for every kind of game. Westera et al., “Serious games for higher education: a framework for reducing design complexity”

How to describe a game’s structure

  1. State the objective and ending. Explain the player’s aim and the condition that records success, failure, or completion.
  2. Name the central action. Describe what players do most often and what choices that action allows.
  3. Explain the important rules. Include when actions are allowed, their limits, and how their results are determined.
  4. Walk through a typical turn or loop. Show the sequence of action, response, and next decision so the reader can picture how play advances.
  5. Specify the player arrangement. Give the relevant player count or mode of interaction, such as solo, cooperative, or competitive.
  6. Describe feedback and state changes. Explain what the game communicates after an action and how the situation changes.
  7. Add other defining systems. Include narrative, levels, progression, interface, economy, or learning purpose when they materially affect the experience.

This sequence is also a practical design aid: a 2026 game-design course resource recommends identifying goals and winning conditions, the central action, critical rules, a typical core loop, and player count and interaction. Game Design Skills: game ideas

How is a game’s runtime structure different?

For a digital game, one concise software-flow model is initialization → repeated game loop → termination. Initialization prepares the game to run; the loop handles ongoing play; termination occurs when the session ends. The 2024 Games Learning Society explainer presents this as a way to describe runtime flow. It complements, rather than replaces, a design description of goals, rules, player relationships, decisions, and outcomes. Games Learning Society: how to design a game

How to compare two game structures

Use the same dimensions for both games or design options. This makes it easier to see whether their differences lie in the objective, the rhythm of play, the social arrangement, or some other part of the experience.

Dimension Question to ask
Goal and outcome What is the objective, and how does play end or register success?
Rules and actions What choices and actions are permitted, and how are they resolved?
Turn or loop What does a typical cycle look like, and when do meaningful decisions occur?
Player arrangement How many players participate, and do they cooperate, compete, or play independently?
Feedback and state change How clearly do actions change the game state and communicate their consequences?
Story, progression and usability Do narrative, levels, economy, or interface change how players understand or navigate play?
Learning purpose, if relevant Do the mechanics support the intended learning objective?

For educational games, distinguish engagement from learning outcomes. The University of Waterloo’s teaching guidance notes that game features can encourage engagement, but engagement and sustained motivation do not necessarily produce improved learning. It also distinguishes gamification from game-based learning. University of Waterloo: gamification and game-based learning
