The “Tetris effect” is an informal name for game-related images or thoughts that linger after sustained play, sometimes while resting or drifting to sleep. It is not, by itself, a mental-health diagnosis. Separately, researchers have studied structured Tetris-based tasks for reducing trauma-related intrusive memories; that protocol is not the same as casually playing the game and is not established as a standalone PTSD treatment.
What does “the Tetris effect” mean?
People use the phrase for mental carryover from a repetitive activity: after playing Tetris, they may notice falling-block images or think about arranging pieces when they are no longer playing. A brief game-related image or thought is not, on its own, evidence that something is wrong with a person’s mental health.

The term is informal, not a diagnosis. Available evidence here does not establish how common the experience is, how long it should last, or a clinical threshold for concern. The ordinary experience of seeing or thinking about game elements around rest or bedtime should also be distinguished from trauma-related intrusive memories studied in clinical research.
Can Tetris help with PTSD flashbacks?
Some studies have found fewer trauma-related intrusive memories after a structured visuospatial task involving Tetris. That finding concerns a particular outcome—intrusive memories—not proof that Tetris prevents or treats PTSD broadly. Results vary by study, participants, comparison group, outcome and follow-up period.

2017 emergency-department trial
A proof-of-concept randomized trial tested a trauma-memory reminder followed by about 20 minutes of Tetris in people treated in an emergency department within six hours of a motor-vehicle accident. Participants in the comparison group completed a written activity log. The publication abstract reports fewer intrusive memories over the following week and a faster decline in their incidence. It also reports a favorable result on one intrusion-symptom measure at one week, but not on other symptom clusters or at one month. The authors said a larger trial was warranted; the study does not establish that Tetris prevents PTSD. Read the trial abstract.
2024 trauma-film pilot
In a pilot study, 60 healthy students watched a trauma film and were randomized to a Tetris dual-task, imagery rescripting or no intervention. At one week, the Tetris group reported fewer film-related intrusions than the no-intervention group. The study found no effect on vividness, emotionality, PTSD-like symptoms, intrusion intensity or explicit memory. Because the sample was small and the trauma was an analogue film rather than real-world exposure, the result has limited generalizability. Read the 2024 study.

2026 report on healthcare workers
In a 25 February 2026 report, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) summarized a randomized trial involving 99 healthcare workers exposed to trauma at work during the COVID-19 pandemic. UKRI reported that the intervention group had ten times fewer intrusive memories than either control group four weeks after starting, and that 70% of intervention participants reported no intrusive memories at six months. The report also says PTSD symptoms improved. These figures are from UKRI’s summary; the primary trial paper and full outcome tables are not available in the material cited here, so they should be understood as reported findings in this study population, not broad proof of effectiveness. The 2026 UKRI report describes an Imagery Competing Task Intervention (ICTI), not simply a recommendation to play a game after a difficult experience. The described protocol has three parts:

- Briefly recall the memory without describing it in detail.
- Learn mental rotation using the “mind’s eye.”
- Use that skill to play Tetris in a particular, slower manner rather than through typical gameplay.
The proposed explanation is that visuospatial processing competes with visual flashback imagery. That is a proposed mechanism, not proof that an unstructured game session has the same effect. Study lead Emily Holmes, Professor of Psychology at Uppsala University, said the intervention is “far more than just playing Tetris” and described it as a process refined and developed for the purpose. - It supports further study of a specific outcome. The 2017 and 2024 studies reported reductions in intrusive memories in their respective settings; UKRI’s 2026 summary reports promising results in healthcare workers.
- It does not make the casual “Tetris effect” a symptom or diagnosis. Lingering game images and experimentally studied trauma intrusions are different experiences.
- It does not establish ordinary Tetris as PTSD treatment. The studied protocols include steps beyond gameplay, and outcomes and follow-up differ across studies.
- It does not replace professional support or established care. The findings do not justify trying to reproduce a trauma-memory protocol on your own.
If intrusive memories are distressing or disrupting daily life, consider seeking help from a qualified mental-health professional rather than relying on a game. Buying or playing a Tetris game is not a substitute for care or for the structured intervention used in research.
