The “thing” behind Stardew Valley’s train station is a blocked cave entrance in the Railroad area. It leads to the Witch’s Swamp, but you need to complete the Dark Talisman quest and use the talisman to open it. The empty box on the train platform is a separate feature for The Mysterious Qi quest.
Where is the blocked cave?
Go to the Railroad area north of the mountain. The blocked entrance is at the northeast end, behind the train platform. It is not the empty box sitting on the platform: that box belongs to a different quest.

How do you open the cave?
Meet the prerequisite
First complete either the Community Center bundles or the Joja Community Development Form. After that, enter the Railroad area to trigger the Wizard’s cutscene and begin the Dark Talisman quest.

Retrieve and use the Dark Talisman
- Speak to Krobus to gain access to the Mutant Bug Lair.
- Enter the Mutant Bug Lair and retrieve the Dark Talisman.
- Return to the Railroad and place the talisman on the artifact blocking the cave entrance.
The entrance then opens to the Witch’s Swamp.
What is in the Witch’s Swamp?
The cave is the route to the Witch’s Swamp and the next part of the Wizard’s quest. Give the Henchman Void Mayonnaise to get past him and reach the Witch’s Hut. Retrieve the Magic Ink there and return it to the Wizard. Returning the ink unlocks the Wizard’s magic farm buildings.

Is the empty box on the train platform the same thing?
No. The box on the platform is used in The Mysterious Qi quest; it does not open the cave. In that quest, the Rainbow Shell is placed in the box. The cave entrance instead requires the Dark Talisman. Keeping the two Railroad features separate avoids following the wrong quest item for the blocked cave.
Does this apply to mods?
These steps describe the vanilla quest structure documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Railroad page. Mods such as Stardew Valley Expanded can add or change content, so a modded playthrough may not match these directions.
