What Is WoW Classic Plus? WoW: Forever’s Four Design Pillars Explained

“Classic Plus” is shorthand used in current reporting for the World of Warcraft: Forever team’s approach to expanding vanilla WoW while preserving its core design, pacing and tone. Blizzard says it judges ideas against four design pillars: protecting social experiences, being approachable and familiar, keeping the world central, and putting the journey before the destination. The team’s decision to leave out Summoning Stones illustrates how those principles can lead it to reject a convenience feature.

“Classic Plus” is not established by these sources as the game’s formal title, and the pillars are not a published feature roadmap. TechRadar Gaming’s October 8, 2026 interview coverage describes the team’s overall approach; a follow-up report on October 9 gives the Summoning Stones example.

What does “Classic Plus” mean here?

In this coverage, “Classic Plus” describes an approach to building on the original, or vanilla, World of Warcraft rather than a confirmed formal product name. The current reporting identifies the project as World of Warcraft: Forever. Blizzard’s stated aim is to add to the vanilla world in a way that remains true to the original game’s core design, pacing and tone.

That distinction matters. A label such as “Plus” can sound like a promise of specific additions, or a settled category with a known feature set. The available statements establish neither. They explain the design principles the team says it uses and show one decision those principles informed. They do not provide a complete roadmap or a rule that determines in advance how every proposed change will be handled.

The team says its four pillars developed through playing different versions of Classic over the years and have a firm basis in vanilla WoW. The pillars are best read as guiding priorities: they describe what the team wants to protect or emphasize, not a public scoring system or a detailed checklist for every feature.

What are WoW: Forever’s four design pillars?

Nurture and Protect Social Experiences

This pillar puts the social fabric of the game among the things a change should preserve. Blizzard’s Summoning Stones example gives the clearest account of its reasoning: if players can reach one another through quick teleports, the team believes they may have less reason to travel and interact along the way. That is Blizzard’s design rationale, not an independently measured finding about how players behave.

The pillar therefore sets up a trade-off between convenience and the interactions that may arise when players have to make their way through the world. It does not establish that all convenience features are unwelcome, or explain how the team would judge every feature with a social effect. The concrete example is narrower: Blizzard says this particular teleport option conflicts with the kind of social experience it wants to protect.

Approachable and Familiar

This pillar signals that additions should remain legible to players who know vanilla WoW. Its name provides a broad direction, but Blizzard’s cited explanation does not define “approachable” with a checklist, usability standard or metric. It would be speculation to turn the label into specific rules about how new content must work.

Familiarity also does not mean that nothing can change: the project is described as building on the original world. The useful distinction is between an addition that extends the experience in a way the team considers recognizable and one that departs from it. The sources name that goal, but do not specify where the boundary falls in cases beyond Summoning Stones.

World as the Main Character

This pillar makes Azeroth itself central to the intended experience, rather than treating the world simply as a collection of destinations to cross between. Blizzard’s reasoning about quick teleports makes the idea concrete: easy access could make the world feel smaller. Preserving a sense of scale is the team’s stated concern, not proof that every shortcut necessarily has that effect for every player.

For a proposed change, this principle invites a question about what the player experiences in the world, not just how quickly they arrive somewhere. The Summoning Stones decision is one answer the team has reported. The sources do not establish a universal ban on fast travel or spell out how other forms of movement would be assessed.

Journey before destination

This pillar emphasizes the experience of getting somewhere and progressing through the world, rather than focusing only on the endpoint. Its phrasing aligns with the concern that teleporting directly to a destination can bypass part of the journey. But the team’s coverage does not offer a separate feature example or a detailed account of what mechanics follow from this principle.

It is safer to treat the pillar as a priority than to infer a specific rule from its name alone. It says that the process of playing and moving through the world matters; it does not establish that travel must always be slow, that every journey must involve combat, or that all convenience changes would undermine progression.

Why is WoW: Forever leaving out Summoning Stones?

The clearest reported application of the pillars is Blizzard’s decision not to include Summoning Stones, also called Meeting Stones in the report’s explanation. In its October 9, 2026 coverage, TechRadar Gaming quotes the WoW: Forever team: “Easy, quick access to teleports shrink the world, and marginalize part of the identity of a class like Warlock.” The team concludes that the feature fails the “Nurture and Protect Social Experiences” and “World as the Main Character” pillars.

The explanation combines three concerns. Quick teleport access, in the team’s view, could reduce the perceived scale of the world; reduce reasons for players to travel and interact; and make a part of Warlock identity less significant. Those are connected but distinct points: one is about how large the world feels, another about opportunities for social play, and the third about the place of a class within the experience. The report presents them as Blizzard’s reasoning for this decision, not as a general finding that all teleports have the same effects.

The example shows why a “Classic Plus” approach cannot be reduced to asking whether a feature is old or new. The design question, as expressed by Blizzard here, is what the proposed change would do to the experience the team values. In this case, faster access loses out against the team’s stated concerns about world scale, social experience and Warlock identity. The example does not establish that every convenience feature will be rejected, or reveal how other proposals will fare.

How to interpret the pillars without treating them as a feature list

The four principles suggest useful ways to understand the trade-offs behind a decision, but Blizzard has not presented them as a formal scoring rubric. A reader can use them to frame the team’s stated priorities without assuming they supply a yes-or-no answer for every future feature.

  • Social interaction and convenience: Would a change, in the team’s view, protect or weaken the reasons players have to meet and engage?
  • World traversal and fast access: Would it preserve the world’s sense of scale, or make destinations feel like isolated stops?
  • Familiarity and novelty: Would an addition feel approachable to players familiar with vanilla WoW while still building on it?
  • Journey and destination: Does the experience of progressing through the world remain important, or does the change focus mainly on reaching an endpoint?

These are interpretive questions suggested by the pillar names and Blizzard’s example, not official tests or published evaluation criteria. The coverage does not describe a review process, thresholds or exceptions. In particular, the broad labels “approachable” and “journey before destination” should not be used to claim that specific mechanics are confirmed or ruled out.

What has Blizzard said about the visual style?

The team’s reported visual goal also rejects a simple either-or between reproducing the look of 2004 assets and matching modern WoW fidelity. Blizzard said: “The goal here is not to create assets that look like they were made in 2004; it’s also not a goal to create assets at the fidelity level of modern WoW.” The desired range, according to the same October 8 coverage, is one that could have existed in vanilla, The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King.

That statement supports describing the intended look as a middle ground, not as a commitment to reuse original assets unchanged or to adopt the visual fidelity of modern WoW. It is an articulation of the target, not a complete art specification: the report does not provide a technical standard or a catalogue of finished assets against which to measure it.

This visual aim fits the broader effort to build on vanilla while keeping its tone, but it should not be confused with a fifth pillar. The four named pillars concern social experience, approachability and familiarity, the world’s importance, and the journey. The visual-fidelity statement is additional context about how the team describes its aesthetic direction.

How does Season of Discovery relate to WoW: Forever?

Season of Discovery is relevant as an example of Blizzard experimenting within WoW Classic, but the available sources do not establish that it is the same project as World of Warcraft: Forever or that its features will carry over. Treat it as historical context, not as a preview of Forever.

At BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard described Season of Discovery as a new twist on WoW Classic built around discoveries hidden throughout the world, level-banded phases, new endgame activities, Rune Engraving and class changes intended to stay true to Classic. Its official launch announcement described hidden runes that unlock abilities unavailable in WoW Classic, freely changeable rune builds and phased level caps.

The season launched with a level cap of 25 and a reworked, 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid as a new level-25 endgame activity. Blizzard’s launch post said players with an active World of Warcraft subscription could access the season without an additional purchase. That is a historical access detail for Season of Discovery; it does not establish current WoW: Forever access or subscription terms.

Blizzard initially announced November 30, 2023, as Season of Discovery’s launch date. That date belongs to the original announcement, not to a current schedule. The official panel recap, BlizzCon 2023 recap, records the season’s announced design; Blizzard’s launch post describes its features and access, while Activision Blizzard’s November 3, 2023 press release gives the initial launch-date context.

What is established—and what is not

The sources establish how Blizzard describes its design priorities and provide one specific decision as an illustration. They do not establish a complete feature roadmap, a universal rule for convenience features, a detailed test for “approachable” design, or the way every future proposal will be judged in practice. Nor do they establish that the “Classic Plus” label is the formal name of the project.

That leaves readers with a clear way to understand the current description without overreading it: WoW: Forever is presented as an expansion of vanilla WoW guided by four principles, with the Summoning Stones decision demonstrating a stated preference for preserving social play and the world’s felt scale over quick access in that instance.
