What Level Should You Start a D&D Campaign At?

For 2024 D&D, start at level 1 with new players, consider level 3 for seasoned groups, and choose level 5 only for a campaign suited to tier 2 characters.

For a new or mixed-experience group playing the 2024 D&D rules, level 1 is the safest starting point. For a table of seasoned players, level 3 is the strongest alternative: the official guidance recommends it particularly for experienced groups, and it gives characters their chosen subclass from the start. Level 5 is a deliberate high-power opening, best reserved for a campaign that calls for established adventurers and a Dungeon Master ready to plan around tier 2 abilities.

How to choose a starting level

There is no universally best starting level. For the 2024 rules, weigh how familiar the players are with D&D, whether the group wants to experience early character growth, how much resilience and character customization it wants at the opening, and what the campaign premise demands. The Dungeon Master’s comfort handling higher-level abilities matters too.

  • Choose level 1 if players are new, or the group wants to learn its characters and develop them through early play.
  • Choose level 3 if the players are seasoned and would prefer a more resilient opening with subclasses already chosen.
  • Choose level 5 if the campaign is about capable, established adventurers and the DM is comfortable preparing for the abilities characters gain by then.

These are conditional recommendations, not a popularity ranking or an objectively measured optimum.

Starting at level 1

Level 1 is a good default for new players because the group can learn its characters as they advance instead of starting with several levels of features to absorb at once. It also suits tables that enjoy playing through the characters’ early development. The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide notes that many campaigns start at level 1.

Starting at level 3

Level 3 is the clearest alternative for an experienced group. The 2024 Basic Rules particularly recommend it for seasoned D&D players, while the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide says to start there if the players are experienced and the DM wants characters to be “a bit more resilient.” Under the 2024 character-creation rules, characters starting at level 3 or higher record a chosen subclass, so players can build around that choice from the campaign’s opening.

This is not a blanket instruction to skip the opening levels. It is a way to begin with more developed characters when the table already knows the game and wants that kind of start.

Is level 5 too high to start?

Not necessarily, but level 5 is a substantial step up rather than a general-purpose default. In the 2024 rules, levels 1–4 are tier 1 and levels 5–10 are tier 2. Starting at level 5 means skipping the first four levels of play and beginning in a tier where character capabilities expand noticeably.

That can fit a premise in which the party are already proven adventurers. It is less suitable if the group wants to learn the game gradually or if the DM does not want to account for the characters’ higher-level abilities from session one. The official guidance specifically calls out level 3 for seasoned groups; it does not make the same general recommendation for starting at level 5.

What changes when characters start above level 1?

The 2024 Basic Rules say to create higher-level characters using the normal character-creation steps, then apply the level-advancement rules. A character begins with the minimum XP needed for its chosen level. For example, the Basic Rules list 64,000 XP as the amount for level 10.

Starting equipment is a separate decision for the DM. The Basic Rules’ table is guidance, not a mandatory package:

Set the level in session zero

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide describes session zero as a time to establish expectations, share ideas, discuss house rules, and often create characters together. Use it to settle the starting level and equipment policy as well as the campaign’s shared premise.

  1. Agree on player experience and campaign tone. Decide whether the group wants to learn through early-level play or begin as more established adventurers.
  2. Choose the starting level. Use level 1 as the baseline for new or mixed-experience groups; consider level 3 for a seasoned group; choose level 5 only when the premise and DM’s preparation support a tier 2 opening.
  3. Set equipment and purchase rules. Confirm whether the DM will use the higher-level equipment guidance, adjust it, or provide a different starting package.
  4. Coordinate characters and expectations. Discuss house rules, character choices, and how the party fits together before the first session.

Which edition does this advice cover?

The recommendations and equipment guidance here refer to the 2024 D&D rules. Character progression and starting-level guidance can differ between editions, so a group using the 2014 rules should consult those rules rather than assume these details carry over. The 2014 Dungeon Master’s Guide is a separate rules source.
