“Looks Like Fortnite is Back on the Menu, Boys” referred to Epic Games’ August 16, 2024 launch of the Epic Games Store mobile app. Fortnite became available through Epic’s own storefront on Android worldwide and on iPhone and iPad in the European Union. It was not an announcement that Fortnite had returned to Apple’s App Store for every iPhone user.
The launch report is historical. Any later changes to Fortnite’s iOS distribution, device support or regional availability need separate, current confirmation.
“Back” meant a new mobile storefront
The headline compressed two separate developments into one playful phrase. Epic launched a mobile version of the Epic Games Store, and Fortnite was one of its first games alongside Fall Guys and Rocket League Sideswipe.
Players were expected to install Epic’s store directly rather than download Fortnite from the usual Apple or Google marketplace. In other words, Fortnite returned to a mobile distribution channel—not universally to Apple’s App Store.

Where Fortnite was available at launch
| Device or region | Availability described on August 16, 2024 | Installation route |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Worldwide availability was reported for the Epic Games Store mobile app. | Download Epic’s store directly from Epic Games. |
| iPhone and iPad in the European Union | Available through the EU’s alternative-app-market framework. | Use Epic’s distribution process to install the Epic Games Store. |
| iPhone and iPad outside the European Union | The launch report did not establish availability through this route. | Do not assume that owning an iPhone was sufficient. |
| Apple’s App Store | The report did not describe Fortnite as restored to Apple’s official store. | This was not an App Store return. |
That regional distinction was the practical heart of the story. “Fortnite is back on iOS” would have been misleading without adding “through Epic’s store” and “in the European Union.”
What players could get from the mobile Epic Games Store
Three launch games
- Fortnite
- Fall Guys
- Rocket League Sideswipe
The report described the Epic Games Store app as free. The listed games were free to download and play, while still offering optional in-app purchases. “Free” therefore meant free-to-play, not that every item or service inside each game cost nothing.
The launch did not mean that Epic’s entire PC catalog was available on mobile. It established a small initial mobile lineup, with Fortnite as the headline title.

Why Fortnite had disappeared from iPhone and iPad
Epic’s mobile-store strategy grew out of its dispute with Apple and Google over mobile distribution and payments. Epic objected to mandatory in-app payment rules and the commissions attached to them. After Epic attempted to bypass Apple’s payment system inside Fortnite, Apple removed the game from the App Store. The companies then pursued a long-running legal and regulatory conflict.
That background explains why Epic wanted a storefront it controlled: it could manage distribution and payment relationships directly instead of relying entirely on Apple’s or Google’s marketplace rules. This is context for the launch, not a claim that every legal question had been resolved by August 2024.

Potential advantages
- Android players had a direct Epic-managed installation option worldwide, as described at launch.
- EU iPhone and iPad users gained an alternative to Apple’s App Store for Epic’s games.
- Another storefront introduced more competition in mobile game distribution.
- Epic could present its own account, payment and update experience.
Practical trade-offs
- Installing another storefront was less familiar than using a device’s default marketplace.
- Access depended on both operating system and country.
- Players had to manage an additional app and sign-in flow.
- Optional purchases remained part of the free-to-play model.
- The launch report did not provide a universal device-compatibility list, performance guarantee, parental-control description or support policy.
How to approach installation safely
The original report directed readers to Epic’s own download process. Use Epic’s official pages rather than mirrors or modified packages. The vendor’s main store is store.epicgames.com, and Epic’s Fortnite site is fortnite.com.
- Check your country first, especially if you use an iPhone or iPad.
- Confirm that your device and operating-system version are supported by the current Epic installer; the 2024 report did not specify universal requirements.
- Download only from Epic, not from an APK or IPA mirror.
- Never enter an Epic password into a site offering “free V-Bucks” or a modified installer.
- Sign in with the Epic account associated with the progress and purchases you intend to use. Account-linking and cross-progression behavior should be checked in Epic’s current support documentation rather than assumed from the launch article.
- Expect game performance to vary with the phone or tablet’s chipset, storage, network, graphics settings and thermal condition.
What the headline did not promise
- It did not promise Fortnite on every iPhone or iPad.
- It did not announce a return to Apple’s App Store.
- It did not make iOS availability global.
- It did not turn Fortnite into a game without optional purchases.
- It did not make every Epic PC game available on mobile.
The accurate reading is narrower and more useful: on August 16, 2024, Epic opened a mobile storefront, bringing Fortnite with it to Android worldwide and to iOS users in the European Union. Whether those boundaries later changed is a separate current-status question, not something this launch report established.
