OpenXR gives a Unity VR game a standards-based route to supported XR devices through Unity’s OpenXR provider plug-in. It can make shared feature code easier to reuse across compatible platforms, but it does not make every headset, runtime, or capability interchangeable: support still depends on the provider, runtime, device, and hardware.
What OpenXR changes in a Unity project
OpenXR is an open, royalty-free standard developed by Khronos to help developers target a range of AR and VR devices. Unity exposes it as an XR provider plug-in, which you enable and configure through XR Plug-in Management. Unity’s OpenXR Plugin manual describes the standard and the Unity integration.
Unity’s XR architecture separates application features from platform-specific providers. Providers implement shared subsystem interfaces; Unity Engine or package APIs make those features available to the game. When a game uses those common interfaces, some feature code may carry across providers and similar platforms. The provider and target device must still support each feature the game needs. Unity’s XR architecture manual explains both the plug-in model and this support boundary.
What may be reusable
Code built against shared Unity XR interfaces may need fewer provider-specific changes when moving between platforms with compatible support. That is a potential development benefit, not a guarantee that the entire project can move unchanged.

What remains device- or provider-dependent
Input, hardware capabilities, and other XR features are available only when the active provider and device support them. A common standard does not give every headset identical capabilities or make one build work everywhere.
How to enable OpenXR for a build target
- Open Edit > Project Settings > XR Plug-in Management. Install XR Plug-in Management if the project does not already have it.
- Select the relevant build-target tab in XR Plug-in Management, then enable OpenXR for that target.
- Check the OpenXR settings and confirm that the intended features and target device are supported by the provider and runtime you plan to use.
- Open Project Validation in XR Plug-in Management and review the rules for the target platform. Use the available Fix or Edit actions where appropriate, then address build-blocking errors.
- Build for the selected target and test with the actual runtime and hardware you intend to support.

Package versions depend on the Unity Editor release
Unity’s Unity 6 manual lists OpenXR package version 1.16.1 and XR Plug-in Management version 4.5.3 for Editor 6000.0. Those listings apply to that editor release; they are not universal version requirements for every Unity project. Check the package versions available for the project’s own Editor version.
What happens when a project has multiple XR providers
A Unity project can include more than one XR provider. Providers enabled for the active build target are included in the build, and runtime loading follows the order shown in XR Plug-in Management; Unity says that order is alphabetical by default. Therefore, enabling OpenXR does not alone establish which provider a multi-provider build will select. Unity’s provider configuration manual documents the selection behavior and ways to control it.

Unity describes three ways to control provider selection:
- Disable XR initialization at startup and select a provider in application logic.
- Use a custom build script to sort providers.
- Enable only the intended provider before building.
For a game with one intended runtime, enabling only the provider needed for that build is the most direct way to avoid ambiguity. If the app must choose at runtime, configure and test that selection deliberately.

How to judge whether OpenXR fits a target headset
Evaluate the actual combination of Unity Editor, provider, runtime, build target, and device rather than treating “OpenXR support” as a blanket compatibility promise. Before committing to a target, check:
- Device and operating system: Is the target device supported by the relevant OpenXR runtime and Unity provider?
- Required features and input: Does that specific provider and device expose the tracking, controls, and other XR features the game requires?
- Unity compatibility: Are the Editor and package versions appropriate for the project?
- Provider selection: Is the intended provider enabled and selected for each build target?
- Project setup: Does Project Validation report errors or warnings that need attention?
The Unity documentation cited here explains the provider model and setup, but it does not establish a complete device-by-device compatibility matrix. Check the documentation for the relevant runtime and hardware before promising support for a specific headset.
