There is no single best orc to recruit in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The right captain is the one whose class, tribe, fighting style, and weaknesses suit the job you need done. Official guidance explains these attributes and how to inspect them, but it does not rank them, so your choice should follow from your army’s needs and the threats you expect to face.
Decide the job before you pick a captain
Recruiting works best when you know what role the captain will fill. The official game site illustrates army identities such as Overlord, Bodyguard, and Spy, and WB Games Support describes Warchief and assault roles. These labels describe what an army is built to do. They do not indicate which captain is more effective.

| Role | Where sources identify it | Question to ask about a candidate |
|---|---|---|
| Overlord | Official Middle-earth: Shadow of War site | Do the captain’s traits support leading and holding a larger force? |
| Bodyguard | Official Middle-earth: Shadow of War site | Can the captain protect a key follower without an exposed weakness the enemy can target? |
| Spy | Official Middle-earth: Shadow of War site | Does the captain’s profile suit infiltration and gathering information? |
| Warchief | WB Games Support | Does the captain fit leading the army as a whole? |
| Assault | WB Games Support | Is the captain suited to offensive fighting, and can its weaknesses be managed in combat? |
The table’s questions are a way to read each candidate against a role, not a ranking. Confirm the role’s exact effect in your own game before committing a captain to it.
Read the captain’s intel before recruiting
The Xbox game manual states that captains have unique traits and that intel is how you learn their strengths and weaknesses. Intel is the most direct way to avoid a captain whose vulnerabilities an enemy can easily exploit. A strong trait does not cancel out a weakness, so judge both together. If a candidate’s strengths fit your role but its weakness is one your army cannot cover, pass on it and look at another captain.

Assess the whole follower, not just the class label
WB Games Support’s Orc Follower FAQ explains that followers have classes, tribes, and fighting styles, and that powerful followers may also have an advanced class. The same FAQ covers army placement and deployment constraints. To review class, advanced-class, and tribe information in the game, open Menu > Guide > Nemesis. Each attribute is a separate factor, so a good match on one does not automatically make a candidate suitable overall.
Class
The class tells you the candidate’s basic combat identity. Compare it against the role you chose and against the threats you expect, rather than picking the class you have used most often.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-Earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the dark lord and Nazgul.
- Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories - anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly soldier to a mighty overlord.
- Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron' s fortresses and turn them against him.
Tribe
Tribe is a follower attribute listed in the Nemesis guide. Check it alongside the candidate’s traits when deciding whether the captain fits your army’s makeup.
Fighting style
Fighting style describes how a follower engages in combat. Pair it with the assignment: a style that works for a frontline role may not suit a captain who needs to stay out of direct fights.
Rank #3

Advanced class
Some powerful followers have an advanced class. It can add to a captain’s value, but it is one factor among the others, and it does not replace the intel check.
Use a checklist before you commit
- Which army function needs filling: fortress defense, assault, bodyguard support, or another role?
- What does the captain’s intel show about its strengths and weaknesses?
- Do the class, fighting style, tribe, or advanced class support that role?
- Can you live with the captain’s weaknesses in this role, given the threats you expect?
- Would training make the captain better suited to the job?
Train the recruit after you choose it
Recruitment is the starting point, not the end of the build. WB Games Support explains that Training Orders can be applied to followers from the Army screen. Use training to shore up a captain you have already judged suitable, rather than to rescue one that does not fit the role. Because the game’s systems can change between updates, check the Army screen and the Nemesis guide in your own version before planning around specific options.
Rank #4
- A MONUMENTAL STORY: Immerse yourself in the epic scale of Middle-earth as you forge a new ring and siege epic fortresses to face the Dark Lord and Nazgul.
- NEMESIS SYSTEM EVOLVED: Experience a richer and more personal world full of new enemy types, stronger personalities and deeper stories – anyone you face can now evolve from a lowly Soldier to a mighty Overlord. Personal Nemesis or Ally.
- TURN MORDOR AGAINST SAURON: Go behind enemy lines and use strategy, cunning or brute force to conquer Sauron’s fortresses and turn them against him.
- IN MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR, NOTHING WILL BE FORGOTTEN.
What the sources establish and what they do not
- WB Games Support, Orc Follower FAQ: the primary source for follower classes, tribes, fighting styles, advanced classes, army placement, and deployment constraints, and for the Nemesis guide path.
- Official Middle-earth: Shadow of War site: identifies Overlord, Bodyguard, and Spy as army identities. It does not compare how effective each is.
- Xbox game manual: confirms that captains have unique traits and that intel reveals strengths and weaknesses.
- WB Games Support, Training Orders: confirms that Training Orders can be applied from the Army screen.
- Neoseeker guide: offers secondary advice on trait changes and role-specific tactics. Treat this as player guidance rather than an official guarantee.
None of these sources names a best captain or a best trait combination, and none gives a success rate for any recruit. Any build idea you read elsewhere should be tested against your own army and the enemies you face.
