If you mean the live-action Sonic movies and their Paramount+ spin-off, watch them in this order: Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Knuckles (2024), then Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). Paramount’s viewing guide places Knuckles between the second and third films in story chronology.
If you mean every Sonic cartoon, the official material does not establish a single required order. Treat each animated show as its own starting point, and follow a specific show’s episode guide once you pick one.

Why Knuckles goes before the third film
Paramount’s guide states outright that Knuckles takes place between the second and third films, so the placement is an official chronology rather than a fan reading. Watching the series after the third film would reverse that story sequence. The series is short, six episodes, which makes it easy to slot in before the final film without a large time commitment.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is announced, not released
SEGA Corporation’s January 22, 2025 announcement said the fourth film is planned for theatrical release on March 19, 2027 from Paramount Pictures. That is the most recent official date in the material reviewed, so treat it as a planned schedule rather than a completed release. The same announcement reported $425 million in worldwide box office for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That figure describes the franchise’s performance and does not change the recommended order.
Where the cartoons fit
The Paramount live-action sequence does not cover the wider Sonic animation catalog, and the official material does not give a complete cross-series chronology. Shows you may encounter include:

- Sonic Prime, a Netflix animated series co-produced with WildBrain, as described in SEGA’s announcement of the show.
- Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, listed as a separate animated series in Paramount’s catalog.
- The 1990s animated series, also listed separately in Paramount’s catalog.
These shows should not be slotted into the film sequence. Choose one by its own premise and watch its episodes in release or episode-guide order.

SEGA describes Sonic as a franchise spanning games, film, animation, music, and merchandising. The film order above answers only the question of the live-action films and Knuckles. It does not place the video games in a sequence, and the official material reviewed does not give one.
