What Path Tracing Changes in Games—and the Hardware It Requires

Path tracing unifies more of a game’s lighting, but performance depends on the title, resolution, settings, and target frame rate. Cyberpunk 2077’s Overdrive specs show why there is no universal GPU requirement.

Path tracing brings more of a game’s lighting into one simulation: light from many sources can bounce between surfaces, shape softer shadows, and contribute detail to reflections. The result can make lighting feel more connected, but the extra work can sharply increase GPU demands. There is no universal “path-tracing GPU”: requirements depend on the game, resolution, frame-rate target, settings, and use of reconstruction or frame generation.

What does path tracing change in a game?

Traditional real-time rendering often combines several techniques to approximate lighting. A game with selective ray tracing may calculate only particular effects, such as reflections or shadows. A path-traced mode uses a more unified approach to follow light paths through a scene, so more lighting effects can respond to the same sources and bounces.

In Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive technology preview, the developer and NVIDIA describe light from many emissive objects, indirect light bouncing onto nearby surfaces and carrying color, softer shadows, and reflections that can include bounced detail. The practical difference is not a guarantee that every scene looks “realistic”; it is that lighting, shadows, and reflections can fit together more coherently, particularly around colored lights and reflective surfaces. Other games may implement path tracing differently.

Overdrive is a distinct option from Cyberpunk 2077’s conventional rendering and standard ray-tracing settings. It is not a universal graphics standard or a promise of perfect results in every scene. CD PROJEKT RED introduced it as a technology preview; NVIDIA’s technical description explains the lighting approach in that game.

How demanding is path tracing?

Path tracing can require substantially more GPU work than conventional rendering or a mode that ray-traces only selected effects. CD PROJEKT RED says Cyberpunk 2077’s Overdrive mode is “very GPU intensive” and sets it to off by default. A powerful GPU by itself does not guarantee a particular frame rate at every resolution and graphics preset.

Use the requirements for the exact game and target you care about. Compare the GPU and its VRAM, system RAM, output resolution, frame-rate goal, preset, and whether the specification assumes upscaling or generated frames. The official Cyberpunk 2077 requirements page distinguishes Overdrive from standard ray tracing and conventional graphics profiles. It applies to the listed Update 2.0 / Phantom Liberty configurations, not to every path-traced game.

Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive: examples, not universal minimums

Use case or target Published requirement How to interpret it
Overdrive, 4K at 60 FPS GeForce RTX 4080, 16 GB VRAM, 24 GB system RAM, and DLSS Frame Generation switched on CD PROJEKT RED’s specified Update 2.0 / Phantom Liberty configuration; it is not a general path-tracing threshold.
Overdrive recommendations RTX 40 Series from RTX 4070 Ti upward; RTX 3090 at 1080p/30 FPS CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance; the RTX 3090 recommendation is explicitly tied to 1080p/30 FPS.
Path-traced Photo Mode screenshots Minimum VRAM thresholds: 8 GB at 1080p, 10 GB at 1440p, and 12 GB at 2160p These are for single Photo Mode screenshots, not repeated real-time gameplay frames. The developer notes that a still image requires one render.

The 4K/60 profile names a GeForce RTX 4080, but that figure is useful only with its stated game, resolution, frame-rate target, system memory, and DLSS Frame Generation condition. Do not treat it as either the minimum for all path tracing or a buying recommendation for other games.

Will your GPU run path tracing smoothly?

There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based only on a GPU model. Check the game’s current official requirements or graphics guidance, then match the profile to your intended use. In particular, do not substitute a Photo Mode VRAM threshold for a gameplay requirement, or assume that “ray tracing” requirements cover a more demanding path-traced mode.

  1. Identify the exact game and mode. Confirm whether it offers a full path-traced mode or only selected ray-traced effects, and check the game’s current requirements for that mode.
  2. Set your target. Choose the output resolution and frame rate you actually want; a 1080p/30 target is not comparable to 4K/60.
  3. Match the whole configuration. Compare GPU model and VRAM, system RAM, and any other requirements listed for the game, along with the preset you intend to use.
  4. Check required rendering features. Note whether the profile assumes upscaling, frame generation, or ray reconstruction, and confirm the game and your hardware support the specific feature.
  5. Distinguish gameplay from a still image. A single path-traced screenshot does not establish that the same system can render successive frames at a playable rate.

Can upscaling and frame generation help?

They can be part of a supported game’s performance setup, but their availability and role vary. Cyberpunk 2077’s published 4K/60 Overdrive configuration explicitly switches on DLSS Frame Generation. NVIDIA also describes DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation for Alan Wake 2. These are game- and hardware-specific features, not a guarantee that any GPU can meet a target simply by enabling them.

Ray reconstruction is another feature associated with supported ray-traced games. In NVIDIA’s article about Alan Wake 2, Remedy Entertainment lead graphics programmer Tatu Aalto said: “The new Ray Reconstruction feature in DLSS 3.5 renders our fully ray-traced world more beautifully than ever before, bringing you deeper into the story of Alan Wake 2.” That is a developer’s statement in an NVIDIA article about that game, not a universal performance claim. See NVIDIA’s Alan Wake 2 and DLSS 3.5 feature article.

What if your PC cannot handle local path tracing?

Cloud streaming is a separate option for supported games. NVIDIA describes playing Cyberpunk with RTX features through GeForce NOW on a lower-end local rig. In that setup, the game is streamed rather than rendered entirely on the local PC; access depends on the service, supported title and features, network quality, and latency. It does not remove local hardware requirements for playing the game directly on your own PC. Current regional availability, pricing, and catalog were not established here, so check GeForce NOW’s current service details before relying on it. NVIDIA discusses the Cyberpunk cloud-play option.
