To meet the currently published minimum for Squadron 42, Steam lists a Windows 11, 64-bit PC with a quad-core Intel i7 Sandy Bridge-or-later or AMD Bulldozer-or-later CPU, 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet, and 150 GB of available storage. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) separately says an SSD is required for its games, including Squadron 42. These are minimum requirements, not a promise of a particular resolution, graphics quality, or frame rate. Steam lists Q2 2027 as the planned release window; the game is not yet available there, so its requirements and real-world performance may change before release.

The following is the game-specific minimum specification shown on Steam on October 13, 2026. Steam does not publish a useful set of recommended CPU or GPU models, or a recommended resolution and frame rate.

The listed graphics requirements mention both a DirectX 11.1-compatible card and DirectX 12. Preserve that distinction when checking a PC: the store page states both conditions, and does not explain them as alternatives. It also does not provide a named graphics-card model with which to simplify the check.

Steam’s store page is the more recent, game-specific listing for Squadron 42. RSI’s support article, “Game and Launcher Requirements,” is a general guide for Cloud Imperium Games titles, including Squadron 42, and was updated on December 17, 2025. It gives Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of RAM, a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2, and FMA3, at least 16 GB of system RAM, and a 150+ GB SSD.

Those lists should not be combined into a single blended specification. For the current minimum specifically listed for Squadron 42, use Steam’s Windows 11 and 8 GB VRAM entries. Use RSI’s broader article for its SSD and installation context, while recognizing that it is not the same game-specific listing. The graphics figures refer to different types of memory: Steam names VRAM on the graphics card, while RSI’s general page describes graphics memory as RAM. Neither page establishes that a PC meeting the older general list will satisfy every newer Steam entry.
Minimum requirements are not performance targets
A minimum requirement answers whether a system is within the publisher’s stated baseline; it does not tell you how well the game will run. Steam’s Recommended section says only that a 64-bit processor and operating system are required. It does not name a recommended CPU, GPU, amount of RAM beyond the minimum listing, resolution, graphics preset, or expected frame rate.
As a result, there is no evidence-backed way to translate the published minimum into a promise such as “60 frames per second,” “high settings,” or “4K.” A PC that meets the listed baseline could still deliver a different experience depending on the final build, settings, and the rest of the system. No independent benchmark results are available here to support a particular GPU or CPU recommendation. If you want to buy a PC specifically for a known performance level, wait for fuller official recommendations or credible testing of a released build rather than treating a component upgrade as a guaranteed frame-rate improvement.

Likewise, exceeding one line does not automatically compensate for missing another. A powerful processor does not establish that a graphics card has the stated VRAM or DirectX compatibility; extra system memory does not turn a hard drive into an SSD. Compare each component against its corresponding requirement instead of treating a single overall label such as “gaming PC” as proof.
How to check your PC against the list
On Windows, use the built-in system information tools before deciding whether anything needs an upgrade. RSI points users to DXDiag or System Information for checking specifications. The labels and screens can vary slightly by Windows version, but these steps identify the relevant details:
- Check Windows and processor: Open Start, search for “System Information,” and open the result. In the System Summary, note the operating-system name and system type, then locate the processor entry. In Settings, you can also go to System > About to see the Windows edition, device type, and processor information.
- Check installed memory: In Settings > System > About, read the installed RAM entry. If the displayed amount is close to a requirement, check the PC maker’s specifications as well; some systems reserve part of installed memory for hardware.
- Check the graphics card and DirectX: Search Start for “dxdiag” and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. The System tab reports the DirectX version. Select the Display tab to see the graphics device and display-memory information. If the PC has more than one graphics adapter, check which one is used for games and consult the card maker’s specification to confirm DirectX compatibility and dedicated VRAM.
- Check free storage and drive type: Open File Explorer, select This PC, and inspect the free space on the drive where you would install the game. To identify whether a drive is an SSD, open the Windows drive-optimization tool or consult the computer or drive maker’s information. Capacity alone does not reveal drive type.
- Check internet access and platform support: Confirm that you have a working broadband connection and that the PC’s motherboard, firmware, and drivers support the operating system and components you intend to use. The Steam listing does not give a numeric broadband-speed threshold.
For a custom-built PC, the model name shown in Windows may be too broad to confirm a graphics card’s memory or the CPU’s generation. Check the exact CPU and GPU model against the manufacturer’s specifications. If you are unsure whether a family-era CPU description applies, verify the exact processor model and core count rather than relying on an “i7” label alone; that branding spans multiple generations.

Deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile
Start with the shortfall, not a shopping list. Record your current operating system, exact processor, installed RAM, graphics-card model and VRAM, DirectX support, free drive space, and whether the installation drive is an SSD. Compare those details to the Steam rows above. If all published minimums are met, the available information does not justify a specific additional upgrade for better performance; Steam has not supplied a performance target to aim at.

A graphics-card upgrade depends on the motherboard and available slot, power-supply capacity and connectors, and whether the card fits inside the case. A memory upgrade must match the system’s memory type and stay within the motherboard or laptop’s capacity limits. An SSD must work with the computer’s supported drive interface, and the installation drive needs enough free space for the game and normal operating-system use.
For a laptop or compact prebuilt system, confirm whether a component is replaceable at all. Many laptops have soldered memory or graphics, and small cases can restrict drive or graphics-card options. If the only gap is operating-system support, check whether the computer can run Windows 11 before planning a broader upgrade. The general RSI page’s older Windows 10 entry does not override Steam’s current game-specific operating-system line.

There is no supported price estimate or universal best-value upgrade in the published requirements. The right choice depends on the hardware you already own, what is replaceable, and your budget. Avoid spending on a specific component based only on an assumption about frame rate; the released game’s actual performance targets are not established by the listed minimums.

Steam specifies available storage, whereas RSI’s general requirements call for an SSD and state 150+ GB for its CIG-game context. In practice, check the free space on the drive you plan to use rather than comparing the requirement with the drive’s advertised total capacity. A drive sold as having a certain capacity may already contain Windows, applications, and personal files.
RSI’s guidance also recommends NTFS formatting and additional space for installation and pagefile needs in its RSI Launcher and Star Citizen context. That is useful general installation advice, but it is not a separately specified Squadron 42 Steam minimum. Do not assume a drive with exactly the listed amount of total capacity will have sufficient free space, or that the game’s final installed footprint cannot change before release.

Can you play it now?
No. Steam currently marks Squadron 42 as not yet available and lists Q2 2027 as its planned release window. A release window is not a guaranteed launch date. RSI’s support article updated February 4, 2026 also said the game remained in development and was unavailable for download, with access for eligible RSI accounts after development, testing, and release. In an October 10, 2026 report, PC Gamer said game director Chris Roberts had stated in August that the game was delayed out of 2026; Steam’s current listing is the primary source for the Q2 2027 window.
Because the game has not launched, these requirements are a planning reference rather than a way to verify a playable build on your own PC. Steam’s listing may change before release, and performance expectations will remain uncertain until fuller specifications or testing of the released game become available.
