Instead, Sony introduced an in-game PlayStation overlay with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, released for Windows on May 16, 2024. It connects selected PlayStation Network features—friends, profiles, Trophies and, in Legends mode, console cross-play—to a PC game while leaving Steam or the Epic Games Store in place.
That makes the overlay a meaningful bridge for PlayStation users, but not a complete answer to Xbox’s PC ecosystem.
What Sony announced in April 2024
The feature was announced on April 17, 2024, in Sony’s PC details for Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Sony called it the first PlayStation PC title to use the PlayStation overlay. The interface sits on top of the supported game; it is not a standalone launcher and does not replace Steam or Epic Games Store.
Open it from the game’s menu or press Shift + F1 on a keyboard. Sony made the overlay optional in both the single-player campaign and Legends multiplayer. The shortcut is specific to this PC implementation, not a universal Windows command for every PlayStation release.

What the overlay includes
PlayStation Network sign-in
You can connect an existing PlayStation Network account or create one from the game. A PSN account is required for Legends multiplayer, even though the overlay itself is optional. Sony’s account portal is available at PlayStation Network.
Friends, profile and settings
The overlay exposes your PlayStation friends list, profile and relevant settings while you play. That gives PC users access to their PlayStation social graph instead of relying solely on Steam or Epic contacts.
PlayStation Trophies
The PC version uses the same Trophy set as the PS5 version. When the same PSN account is connected, existing Ghost of Tsushima Trophy progress can carry over under Sony’s stated account conditions. This is game-specific account continuity, not a promise that every PlayStation PC game shares progress with consoles.
Steam and Epic achievements remain separate
Ghost of Tsushima also supports the native achievement systems of Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can therefore earn PlayStation Trophies and store achievements for the same game, but they are separate systems with potentially different unlock timing or requirements.

Legends cross-play: the feature’s biggest practical benefit
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends supports cross-play between Windows PC, PS4 and PS5. Sony said the feature would be in beta at launch and that PC players would invite PlayStation Network friends to sessions. PSN sign-in is mandatory for Legends, regardless of whether you keep the overlay visible.
PlayStation integration does not make every PC multiplayer release cross-play compatible. Cross-play, supported platforms and account requirements must be checked for each individual title.
What it does not do
- It does not turn a PS5 purchase into a PC license or establish Xbox-style Play Anywhere cross-buy.
- It does not provide a PlayStation equivalent to PC Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate.
- It does not replace Steam or Epic Games Store.
- It does not guarantee cross-save, cross-play or Trophies in every PlayStation PC game.
- It does not remove the need to buy the PC version separately.
The primary announcement establishes the overlay’s functions in Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Broader availability should not be assumed without a title-specific confirmation.
Why coverage compared it with Xbox
The original April 2024 framing described Sony as coming for Xbox’s position on PC. That comparison is understandable, but it covers only one layer of the competition. Microsoft controls Windows and Xbox, operates a dedicated Xbox PC app, offers PC Game Pass, and supports Play Anywhere for eligible purchases and shared progress. The overlay addresses social identity, achievements and one game’s cross-play—not subscriptions, storefront ownership or universal licensing.

In other words, Sony copied a useful piece of a connected ecosystem rather than reproducing the whole Xbox model.
Who benefits most
Existing PlayStation users
Players moving from PS5 to PC can keep a familiar PSN identity and, for this game, relevant Trophy progress. Friends already on PlayStation are easier to reach than if the PC version used only a new account system.
Trophy collectors
The dual-achievement setup is attractive if you want both a PlayStation Trophy list and Steam or Epic milestones. It can also be confusing: progress belongs to two different services, so an unlock in one does not necessarily appear in the other.
Cross-platform Legends groups
PC owners who regularly play with PS4 or PS5 friends get the clearest functional payoff. Invitations and cross-play depend on PSN connections and the supported Legends mode.

PC-first players who avoid account linking
The overlay is less appealing if you do not want another account attached to a Steam or Epic purchase. Single-player play does not require the overlay, but Legends does require PSN.

Buy Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for the game itself; treat the overlay as an added convenience rather than the product’s main justification. Sony’s announcement does not establish a current August 2026 price, and PS5 ownership should not be treated as a PC entitlement.
The published PC specifications are for Ghost of Tsushima, not for the overlay generally:

|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Memory guidance | 8 GB minimum listed; 16 GB on recommended presets |
| Storage | 75 GB |

Troubleshooting common problems
The shortcut does nothing
Use the game’s in-game menu instead. Confirm that you are running the Windows version of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and that the game supports the overlay.
Legends will not start
Check that you are signed in to PSN. Sony requires PSN access for Legends, even when the overlay is otherwise optional.
Trophies or old progress are missing
Verify that the PC game is linked to the same PSN account used on PS5. Steam or Epic account achievements do not substitute for PlayStation account linking.
Friends cannot be invited
Make sure they are added through PlayStation Network and that you are using the supported Legends mode and platform combination. Network integration alone does not activate cross-play in unrelated games.
Verdict: useful bridge, not an Xbox replacement
PlayStation’s PC overlay matters because it brings a recognizable console identity to Windows: Trophies, friends, profiles and, in Ghost of Tsushima Legends, PC-to-PS4/PS5 play. It is optional for campaign play and coexists with Steam and Epic systems.
But the April 2024 launch did not deliver cross-buy, a Game Pass rival, a replacement storefront or universal PlayStation PC features. The fairest description is an incremental ecosystem layer—valuable to PlayStation users and cross-platform groups, but far narrower than Xbox’s integrated PC strategy.
