Florian Wirtz is an attacking midfielder and free-roaming playmaker, not a player tied to one fixed position. He is especially effective when he can receive around the left half-space with room to turn forward, carry at defenders and combine near the penalty area. His exact role has changed between Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool, so the useful question is not simply “No. 10 or winger?” but whether a team gives him space, forward-facing receptions and freedom to move.
Wirtz’s position in brief
UEFA’s roster lists Wirtz simply as a midfielder. Tactically, he is best understood as an attacking midfielder or playmaker who can start from the left, move inside and roam across the attacking line. “Inverted winger” describes where he often appeared; “left-sided No. 10” describes his function in Bayer Leverkusen’s formation. Neither label means he must stay in one lane.
Liverpool FC’s June 2025 profile says that Wirtz was used mostly as an inverted winger on the left in the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, while drifting across the pitch like a typical No. 10. In that season, 45% of his open-play touches were on the left side of the opposition half, according to the club’s analysis. That figure describes a specific season and touch-location measure, not a permanent position.
How his role has differed by team and period
Leverkusen: left-sided No. 10 with room to roam
In Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, Wirtz commonly occupied the left of the two attacking midfield positions. Premier League analysis describes him as having permission to roam across the final third and suggests that some of his best work came when he cut inside from the left. Because Leverkusen often dominated possession, he tended to remain in advanced areas rather than repeatedly dropping deep to help build play.

The descriptions “left-sided No. 10” and “inverted winger” fit together: one identifies his tactical job, the other his frequent starting and receiving area. Liverpool FC also reports that Alonso used him as a false nine at times during the 2023–24 season. That was a variation, not his defining position.
Liverpool: a role that has shifted
In its account of Liverpool’s early 2025–26 season, Premier League analysis describes Wirtz as the central No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1. In that setup, the other attackers’ positioning meant many of his touches came closer to the right flank; he also dropped toward the midfield line or centre-backs to help progress possession. The analysis argued that those duties could take him away from the left half-space and final-third zones where he had often operated at Leverkusen.

BBC Sport’s tactical analysis on October 3, 2025, likewise noted that Liverpool were asking him to receive deeper and contribute to build-up, leaving him less often near goal. Against compact opponents, a central reception between the lines can be especially difficult: defenders close quickly, leaving less time to turn or choose a pass.
A later Premier League analysis describes a broader mix of positions at Liverpool: No. 10, left, right and false nine. It says Wirtz began finding more advanced and wider pockets rather than remaining in a crowded central channel. Its figures are specific to its stated sample periods: central touches between halfway and the 18-yard box accounted for 37% of his touches in his first 15 Premier League appearances, compared with 27% from the Spurs match onward. Left-side touches between halfway and the byline rose from 14% to 32% across those periods.

That same analysis compared his first 15 matches with its “last six matches” period. It reported completed dribbles rising from 14 to 16; passes per 90 from 45.60 to 73.80; shots per 90 from 1.61 to 2.52; and touches in the opposition box per 90 from 5.02 to 7.92. These comparisons belong to the article’s defined samples, not to a season-long average. The analysis linked the change in role partly to increased involvement across the attacking midfield zone and another midfielder occupying the No. 10 space, allowing Wirtz to stay higher.
Where Wirtz is most effective
Receiving with space and facing forward
Wirtz’s most useful receptions often come when there is distance between him and the nearest defender. BBC Sport’s tactical correspondent highlights the value of receiving on the back foot, already oriented toward goal. From there, Wirtz can carry at a defence instead of having to protect the ball with his back to pressure.

Starting left, then attacking inside
The left side is a productive reference point because it gives him access to the half-space and a route to cut inside. Liverpool FC’s account of his 2024–25 touch locations and Premier League analysis of his Leverkusen role both support that pattern. But it is a starting lane, not a boundary: once he receives, he can move centrally or across the attacking line.
Driving at opponents and combining near the box
When Wirtz can carry forward, changes of speed and body feints can force defenders to commit. He can then continue the dribble, slip a pass to a teammate or create a shooting opportunity. BBC Sport’s analysis identifies transition situations as a setting in which he has produced many of his best Liverpool moments, because stretched opponents leave more room to attack.

Operating in a well-spaced attack
If Wirtz must drop deep to help progress the ball and also be the main creator near goal, those jobs compete for his time in advanced areas. A teammate who takes on some build-up responsibility can help him stay higher; space across the attacking midfield line can also let him avoid the most congested central pockets. These are tactical conditions suggested by the analyses, not a guarantee that a particular formation or teammate will produce a specific result.

Wirtz’s role is not limited to creating chances in possession. Liverpool FC reported that he averaged 1.25 high turnovers per 90 in the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, the most in that league, and registered 679 pressures in nine Champions League appearances that season, the most for Leverkusen. Both figures are season-specific measures reported by the club.
In an interview with Sky Sports Germany reported by BBC Sport on October 3, 2025, Wirtz described the physical demand of pressing and running, saying he needed strength and energy for that work and expected his on-ball actions to come more easily as he played more games and became fitter. His pressing contribution is part of the role, but it also makes energy management relevant when assessing how much build-up and defensive work he should carry alongside his attacking duties.
So, is Wirtz a No. 10 or a winger?
He can function as either, but neither label captures the full picture. At Leverkusen he often started from the left as a left-sided No. 10, with licence to drift; at Liverpool his assignments have included central No. 10, left, right and false nine. The tactical fit is strongest when his role gives him access to the left half-space or another useful pocket, lets him receive facing forward with separation, and leaves enough support around him that he is not pulled away from the box to do every stage of the build-up.
