There is no single programming language every game developer needs to know. Choose the language that fits the engine and kind of work you want to do, then use it to finish a small game. If you have chosen Godot, its Godot 4.4 documentation recommends GDScript for beginners. C# and C++ are also useful options to consider, but neither is a universal requirement or a guarantee of employment.
Choose a language by starting with your engine
For most learners, the practical question is not which language is best in the abstract; it is which language helps them make a game in their chosen toolchain. Check the engine’s official documentation for supported languages and platform constraints before committing to a learning path.
Godot: start with GDScript if you are new
Godot describes GDScript as its integrated scripting language and recommends it for people starting with Godot or game development. Its documentation says: “If you are just starting out with either Godot or game development in general, GDScript is the recommended language to learn and use since it is native to Godot.” See the Godot 4.4 FAQ for the version-specific guidance.
Godot 4.4 lists GDScript, C#, and C++ as supported languages. Its FAQ notes that C# support is missing on the web platform, so check the documentation for the Godot version and release platform you intend to use rather than assuming every language works everywhere.

Unity or a C#-based workflow: consider C#
C# is a strong general-purpose starting choice if you are committed to a C#-based game-development path. JetBrains’ 2025 survey associates C# with Unity and found it to be the most frequently reported language among its game-development respondents. That makes it useful context, not proof that every Unity role requires C# or that learning it alone will secure a job.
Unreal or lower-level work: consider C++
C++ is worth considering for workflows involving Unreal Engine or engine and performance-oriented programming. JetBrains’ report associates C++ with Unreal and found it was the second-most-reported language among its respondents. The survey does not establish that every Unreal role requires C++, nor that it is the right first language for every learner.

Other languages: verify the specific toolchain
Python, JavaScript, Java, and TypeScript also appeared in JetBrains’ survey. Those usage figures alone do not show which game-development roles or engines are a good fit for them. If you are considering one, check the official documentation for the engine, tools, or platform your project will use.
What the 2025 language-use figures do—and do not—show
In its 2025 survey, JetBrains reported the following shares of respondents who said they had used each language for game-development projects during the previous 12 months:

These are respondent figures from JetBrains’ 2025 game-development survey, not market shares, percentages of all game developers, or measures of job demand. Respondents could report multiple languages, so the figures should not be added together. The survey describes reported use; it does not establish hiring outcomes or which language is most in demand in your location.
A practical way to get started
- Pick a target engine or workflow. If you have already chosen one, begin with its official language recommendations and platform support.
- Choose one language for your first project. If you are new and using Godot, begin with GDScript. If your target path is C#-based or involves Unreal and lower-level work, consider C# or C++ respectively.
- Build and finish a small game. Use the language to practice the tasks your project needs, such as responding to input, updating game state, and connecting gameplay systems.
- Add another language when there is a reason. A different engine, role, or platform requirement can justify learning a second language; trying to master several before finishing a game is not a prerequisite.
- Recheck version and platform support. Language support can differ by engine release and target platform. Consult the current official documentation for your intended release rather than relying solely on a version-specific note.
Language choice is a starting point, not a career verdict
Pick the language that lets you make progress in the engine and kind of work you care about. JetBrains’ figures offer a snapshot of reported language use, while Godot’s documentation gives a clear beginner recommendation for its own engine. Neither establishes a universal must-learn language or a hiring guarantee. Local job demand depends on the roles and teams you are targeting, which these sources do not measure.
