Upgrade with a plan: level a Champion to its current cap, rank it up using only expendable same-Rank Champions or Chickens, then budget separately for skills, Ascension, and Masteries. Rank-ups reset the Champion to Level 1, Skill Tome upgrades are random, and Masteries are gated by Rank—so check each cost and eligibility requirement before you commit.
Plan Rank Ups around level caps and reset costs
Rank determines the highest level a Champion can reach. Plarium lists these caps in its Tavern guide:

The material count equals the target Champion’s current Rank. A promotion also returns the Champion to Level 1, so it requires another leveling investment before the next promotion. Check the next cap and whether you can spare the required materials before starting a chain of Rank Ups.
Protect roster Champions before using food
Rank-up food is not automatically expendable. A Champion may have roster, fusion, or Faction Guardian value, and the right choice depends on your account. Lock Champions you want to keep and inspect every proposed material in the Tavern before confirming; do not assume an automated selection understands your future plans.

Choose a leveling method that fits your goal
The Tavern supports battle XP, XP Brews, XP Barrels, and sacrificing eligible Champions. These options differ in what they consume: battles grant XP through play, Brews and Barrels are stored upgrade items, and sacrificing Champions risks losing a roster unit. The official guide does not give a universal cost-per-XP comparison, so there is no evidence-based single best method for every account.
- Battle XP: Level Champions through battles when you also want to progress in the content you are playing.
- XP Brews and Barrels: Apply stored XP resources in the Tavern when direct leveling is useful; consider whether you need to reserve them for another Champion.
- Sacrificing Champions: Use only Champions you have deliberately designated as food, and review the selection before confirming.
- Sparring Pit: It generates XP without battles, but only levels Champions to the cap for their current Rank. It does not promote Rank, as described in Plarium’s Guardian Ring guide.
For Tavern Instant Upgrade, inspect the filters before applying materials. The feature can filter for Rare Champions and Champions in vaults, while protected or tagged Champions may be excluded. Verify the actual selection rather than relying on a filter alone.
Use Skill Tomes only when the Champion merits the investment
Skill Tome upgrades are random: the game assigns each upgrade to an eligible skill, which may affect damage, cooldowns, or buff and debuff chances. You cannot direct a Tome to the skill you want. Plarium also notes that duplicate copies of the same Champion can upgrade skills in the Tavern.

Because the outcome is not selectable and Tomes are hard to obtain, decide first that the Champion is worth investing in. Plarium’s Tavern guidance is to save Tomes for Champions you want to build up, rather than spending them on a temporary or uncertain roster choice.

Ascension requires Arcane Potions and Potions matching the Champion’s Affinity. The Ascension interface shows the next requirement for that Champion and level, so use it to confirm what to collect rather than farming from memory.
- Open the Champion’s Ascension interface and check the displayed requirement.
- Farm the corresponding Potion Dungeon for the needed Potion types.
- If you have lower-tier Potions, use the Potion Mixer to combine them when appropriate.
Plarium’s Tavern guide also identifies the Shop as a Potion source, but does not recommend spending there. Decide whether using that source fits your own resource budget.

Unlock Masteries in line with Rank
Mastery Scrolls come from Minotaur’s Labyrinth. Mastery tiers are gated by Champion Rank, so a Champion cannot unlock tiers above its current Rank. That makes Rank a prerequisite to consider before spending effort on Masteries. Plarium’s Masteries guide also states that Gems can be used for instant upgrades inside the Mastery interface.
Use Instant Rank Up carefully
Instant Rank Up can batch promotions, but its filters determine which rarities and Affinities are spent first. Plarium lists exclusions including locked, Faction Guardian, vaulted, empowered, Arena Defense, and maximum-level Champions in its Instant Rank Up guide. Before executing a batch:
